Wilson/Middlemass Family of Haddington 1790
« on: Friday 19 September 08 18:57 BST (UK) »
Wondering if anyone knows any information of Wilson or
Middlemass families around the Haddington area during
the 1790's.

Trying in particular to find any information on the family
of John Wilson and Margaret Middlemass of Haddington,
who had a son Archibald Wilson in 1790.

Best regards,

Richard

Hi Richard

According to SP, they also had a daughter, Mary , bpt. South Leith, Midlothian  on 14 August 1796.

Nothing else for this combination of surnames nor, so far, any Banns/marriage for them.

Thanks Gadget,

Had a look at SP myself earlier this afternoon, but nothing came
to light. Sadly since they both probably both died before 1855,
it's a loss, unless they lived into their 90's  ;)

Richard

Have you tried the 1841 census  or even  a marriage/death for Archibald or Mary?

I sympathise with Wilsons - got my own  :-\

Hi Richard and Gadget,

I'm not sure if this helps any, but I have Wilsons from Dirleton. That's not too far from Haddington. William Wilson (b. c. 1835 - 1908) was the stepfather of my 2x great-grandfather. He was the son of Archibald Wilson (b. c. 1800) and Catherine Wood. I think Archibald was the son of Walter Wilson (b. c. 1773) and Elizabeth Dawson (b. 1778), but very unsure about that at the moment. :-\ Since there's some similar names in the same area, possibly a connection somewhere along the line?

According to this posting, Walter was the son of an Archibald Wilson and Isabell Foggo.

I have limited info at present but I have a william wilson running a grocers shop in Haddington a little later than that. Married a Janet Amos  daughter Mary Ann Wilso 20/7/1832. I've yet to look into william further as he's an off shoot. father in law to my 3x ggrandfather

I believe that there were several wilsons at haddington. One of my ancestors,Margaret, born about 1775? at Belton Mile, Haddington, had the (married?) name Wilson. She may have married about 1790.

She had at least 2 children, Jean/Jane, who married George Sanson, & William Wilson.
The three of them were living with the Sansons in Dunbar by 1841. I don't yet know anything about her husband.

Both William & Margaret vanished from the Scottish census after 1851. Margaret had surely died by then.

Don't know if this helps. Any link do you think?

Thank you all above for your information which is certainly food for thought!

Thank you, Caledon C for your acknowledgement of a likely connection here. I will write to Tom immediately. Sorry to be tardy replying, but it is summer holidays here & we have been away.
