HOLMSHURST BURWASH - IS IT THE HOME OF ROGER DALTREY
« on: Tuesday 23 September 08 22:39 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Goddard Hepden/Hebden - as far as I know - built Holmshurst in Burwash - it bears his initials and date 1610 - so I guess it is stilll there - I also saw somewhere that it was the home of Roger Daltrey.
Can someone verify that it was indeed the home of the Hepdens and that it is now the home of the great Roger.
I also have a note that the Hepden's bought "Mount House" in Burwash in 1584 - it was built by the Wicks family and then sold to Thomas Roper.
Is there a photo of either of these houses online anywhere - have not found it yet although I found a photo of Mount House Barn which is a 17th century building which does not fit with the date.

Hi Robin

I think the fish farm that Roger Daltrey owned was Holmshurst.  I think it was between Ticehurst and Burwash near to Witherenden.  My brother fished there as a teenager in the late 80s but as far as I know Roger is no longer in this area.  I think he sold up and went to Dorset!

According to http://theweald.org/P2.asp?Pid=Br.Hhurst it seems earlier it was called Homeshurst.  I've just worked out from the map on that page where it is too.  I know the house now and it was definitely where my brother fished.

By coincidence I've just found a mention of Goddard Hepden on this site

He seems to have had quite a lot of lights

Thanks to everyone - I now know quite a lot more about Goddard Hepden, got that great photo of Holmshurst and found the tax on windows very interesting, I wonder if the "lights" were actually windows as it was a window tax,
Thanks to all and so glad I live in the 21st century
