WEBB/MILES West Camel 1850's
« on: Wednesday 24 September 08 13:37 UTC (UK) »

Hoping someone can help with information on my Great Grand parents, and their ancestors and siblings.

My g-g-parents were  John WEBB c1830 and Jane MILES c1832

I know for certain that they Married at West Camel, Somerset, 31 May 1855
I've received a copy of the marriage certificate and it lists John's Father was William Webb  occupation: Labourer   Jane's father was John Miles, also a Labourer

(Marriage registered @ Yeovil, June 1855, Vol 5c, Page 823)

John and Jane immigrated to South Australia 9/6/1855 aboard the Thomas Arbuthnot ex Plymouth

The WEBB/WINDSOR thread has me all excited.....
The 1841 Census apparently lists:
HO107. P. 937 / 5  Fol. -  Pg. 13

South Barrow
WEEB
William  35  Ag Lab
Mary  35
Robert  14  Ag Lab
John  12  Ag Lab
Richard  9
William  7
Silas  4
Alfred  2

All of the names above, except richard, appear in the family regularly in australia.

Johns age is about right, he was listed as  24 when married,  may 1855 and 64yrs when he died nov 1894

Cheers

The Webb/Windsor thread for ref:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,327547.0.html

Welcome to Rootschat, Daryl  Grin

Who were the witness on the 1855 marriage?
Do the death reords of either John or Jane state a mother's name?

Cheers

Yeh, I'm a newbie How could you tell... :-)

The marriage was  after Banns  and held at the Parish Church, West Camel, the presiding minister is something like Chas Langdon,  vicar of queen camel
Witness were Robert Webb and Uhhmm (writing is worse than mine) Chas Sibdall (Dibdall) in truth its  Cha?  ?i??all

John, Jane and Robert all signed with their mark, the vicar and other witness signed but the handwriting is identical....

No mother is listed for either party
Age for both is listed as "off full yr", the ages I have given are from the family bible I transcribed over 30 years ago

make any sense ?

cheers

Hi Daryl

It said "1 post" by your name - dead giveaway that  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin

So with a witness named Robert, I can see why you are excited, thinking you've got a connection to WEBB/WINDSOR!

You won't find a mother listed on any English marriage certificate (unless she happens to be a witness, but in that event she probably wouldn't be identified as the mother of the bride (or of the groom), it will just be her name.

I meant.....when your couple died in Australia, do either of  their Aussie death certs names their mother?

cheers  Grin

Hi Daryl,

I'm the writer of the WEBB/WINDSOR thread - Ambly put me onto your current thread, so to her, THANK YOU.

I have the Parents of your John and my Alfred as William WEBB and Mary BLAGDON, married 8 Jun 1824, South Barrow, Somerset

The following is the found record by Mum44 - I'm presuming it is "Family History OnLine" ?!

I can't see marriages on the IGI either, but found this on FHOL:

Marriage 8 June 1824 South Barrow
William Webb, otp and Mary Blagdon, otp.
Witnessess George Pickford an Emily Mills
All made their mark

I had first child born in 1827 in South Barrow so it fit together nicely for me...even if there may have been one more child prior to that... not sure if there where  anymore William Webbs in the same area around that time... plus one daughter is named Mary also. I've just send a message to her to see if she could check for other William WEBB'S in that area getting married around that time.

Sorry I wasnt clear..  My ancestors are primarily South Australian.  This means that there is basically no online information, and Parents are not recorded on death cerificates :-(.

This is very early days for me chasing family history, and at the moment its more a list of names and dates. Until Today it all stopped with the immigrants, but it looks now as if there is still some family in the old country :-)

cheers

Hi Daryl...not necessarily just the old country!

Alfred Webb's descendants immigrated to Queensland and are still in the Bowen area - heaps of them actually. If you read another post of mine it is in relation to WEBB/HUTCHINGS - that was who married in Queensland and populated the area...

Hi Daryl
Excuse me for butting in, but I came across this thread when Googling for William Webb+Plymouth

Actually I'm certain there's no link, but the coincidence is remarkable

My great grandfather  William Webb was born in Plymouth, Devon, UK in 1859, and he married a Rachel Blagdon
Also his father was called John Webb, b:c1821 near Plymouth

Wonder if they were distant relatives

Hi Mudge,

Do you have info on Rachael's family yet to see if there is a connection to Mary BLAGDON?
