Matthew Haynes - Stafford to Australia
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 11:36 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to locate a Matthew Haynes who emmigrated to Australia. He was born in 1900 in Staffordshire, England (probably in or around Gnosall). His father was Matthew Haynes and he had a brother called John (b. 1893, Gnosall, Staffordshire)

I found 2 records on the National Archives of Australia site which make sense, as I know there is a connection to the name Howard in the Haynes family. The record seems to relate to  Matthew being in the services during WW2...

HAYNES MATTHEW :
Service Number - W48708 :
Date of birth - 23 Jul 1900 :
Place of birth - STAFFORD ENGLAND :
Place of enlistment - CLAREMONT WA :
Next of Kin - HOWARD KATHLEEN

HAYNES MATTHEW :
Service Number - WX6162 :
Date of birth - 23 Jul 1905 :
Place of birth - STAFFORD ENGLAND :
Place of enlistment - CLAREMONT WA : Next of Kin - HOWARD KATHLEEN

I'm having no luck in searching passanger lists and am struggling to find information about Matthew being in Australia.

I was wondering if anyone knows of this Matthew Haynes, has any further info on him, or can advise me on which records/websites I should be searching.

Many Thanks,

Rach

Hi Rach and Welcome to Rootschat

You will find the two army records here as well
http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/script/name.asp#searchtabs

He was initially a Private 1940 & discharged six months later. It may have been because of his age. On this record he gave his birth year as 1905 - probably to be accepted into the sevices - 1900 - he may have been too old.

He then joined a Garrison Battalion - which I think is like the home guard, but the service board folks would know for sure 1942 to 1945.

For a fee of $16.50 you can get a service record digised which may give a little more information about your man - it would have his address on enlistment & may give the relationship to his next of kin.

I have checked a couple of sites but am not finding any information about Matthew. There are links for WA here
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,158142.0.html
and lots of Australian links here
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,399.0.html

Your post will probably get more replies on the immigrants to Australia board - a mod should be able to move it

Hi guys!

Thanks for all your info... and I'll definitely keep pursuing it. Something tells me that I'm on the right track. I came across the Electoral Roll record to and Matthew was probably in the farming industry. Farming runs right through the Haynes' in my family  :)

I was wondering about the 2 birth dates on the records which I found, so it's good to get a feedback on that. Thinking about his next of Kin - Kathleen Howard - she may be his sister (a Haynes who married a Howard back in the UK) as Matthew parents had probably died... if that makes sense.

Anyway,

Thanks again!

Hi,
As we are not able to see Matthew's death in WA, I wonder if it might be worthwhile to follow up this burial in WEST TERRACE Cemetery, South Australia.

http://www.ozgenonline.com/aust_cemeteries/sa/adelaide/aifgndata.htm

There is no information other than the name. Matthew Courtoy Haynes.

The middle name,  is very unusual.  You will know if it is part of your family or not.

The graves in this section/ listing are for ex-servicemen.

A more detailed lookup can be carried out by contacting the cemetery.

A look through the WA post office directory shows he was still at Manmanning in 1938/9
