Wilkie's Lane, Dundee - School
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 16:47 BST (UK) »
I think I remember my Grandmother (Helen Johnston Cuthill) telling me that she went to school in Wilkie's Lane which is off the Blackness Road in Dundee.

She was born in 1917 so I guess went to school there between 1921 to 1930.

I can find no mention of this school anywhere (but my own head!)

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Hi polarbearnoodles ,

Its St Joseph's Primary school!!  I went to the very same school, Roman Catholic primary, still exists too and still has pupils at the same school building.   At the bottom of Wilkies Lane after the boys from the above primary school reached about 8/9 years of age the went down to the boys only St Joseph's on Blackness Road.

Hi again polarbearnoodles,

I should say St Joseph's primary was actually in Bellfield Street and the back entry was in Wilkies Lane, most children entered the school via Wilkies lane but that was actually the back of the school.  There is a good picture of the school on the website address below, scroll down and  its the second last picture, I bit clearer than the one I posted.

If you check out this website there is a better picture of the school which I should say

p.s. My mum and dad were at that school in 1919 when the were 5 years old.

Hi polarbearnoodles,

If you need any more help just give me a shout, I take it you have your grandmothers birth certificate, that would give you her father and mother names too.  It should also say where she was born, would have been at home in those days so you will have her address the family were living at as well, maybe the house will still be standing, who knows.

I noticed you grandmother married in 1930 and her husband was Alexander McLean and they married in the MAINS AND STRATHMARTINE /ANGUS area.

Good idea to get the marriage certificate as well as this will give you the parents names of Alexander as well.

Good luck with your research!!

Betty ;)

Ahh, thanks!  It's addictive isn't it?  My boyfriend likens it to one of those 'sticker books' where you're not happy until you've collected them all!

I've managed to get quite far back - into about 1780 (5 x Great) but I've decided to stop searching backwards for a while and try to find out more about the people I've already found.

Do you know if the school has enrolment books or similar where I might find records of my Grandmother?

For interest, I've attached a photograph of her below when she was probably of school age.  Goodness knows where the money for ballet lessons came from!  (Hope attachment works).

Have you been successful in finding your ancestors?

Pbn x

Oh Pbn,

Wish I could get that far back with my family but there again my grandmother came from Belfast Ireland, however on my fathers side it was ok as they came from Dundee, further back maybe Ireland I haven't got there yet.

No the attchment with the picture hasn't worked but never mind, keep trying you will get the hang of it.

I am not sure about the school keeping enrolment books/records or anything like that but you could contact them and see.

I too have just one picture of my mum when she was young, nothing of my father or my grandparents though.
