Armagh - Moneypenny, Mathew
« on: Sunday 30 January 05 18:05 GMT (UK) »
I'm probably asking a lot here - I apologise in advance - but can anybody find Mathew Moneypenny born 1809 in the Armagh area in 1809 please?

I know this isn't a  lot to go on but I have found a lot of other Moneypennys scattered about in Portadown, Tanderagee, Antrim and Markethill but no Mathews...  I am presuming Mathew was born in Armagh because of this.

Mathew is my great, great grandad and I'm sure I'll be able to link him to the others if I can just find out where he lived!

Thanks,
MissM

Hello MissM,

I have nothing positive to offer other than a wild thought that occured to me. Were any of those Moneypennys that you found born in 1809 ? Have you considered the possibility that Matthew may have been baptized as John or James etc but was always known as Matthew ?

Best Wishes,
Christopher.

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for replying!

I took Mathew's name off his son's wedding certificate so I'm presuming that's right.  There does seem to be two ways of spelling it - one 't' or two - and James appears to have been married three times which isn't helping  :o I'm going to order the other two certificates to see if they help.

In the  censuses, Mathew also changes his age slightly each time so I wasn't sure whether he was born in 1809 until I found him in the BMD's as dying aged 61 in 1872.

These things are never easy are they?!

Thanks again for your suggestion, I will have a look at the DOB's just in case!

Hi Lynne,

How are you progressing in your search for Mathew Moneypenny ? I know a guy of this surname. Whether he knows anything about his family history is a different matter.
As a matter of interest where are you located ?

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for asking.

I haven't got any further at all with Matthew.  I posted requests on the boards for the surrounding counties but as yet, nothing positive has come back.  David maginnis in Tandragee emailed to say there's still loads of Moneypenny's in Portadown.

I tried emailing the Craigavon Council for information on the Portadown Moneypenny's Lock but it just bounced back.  I might try phoning them one weekend.

I'm in Liverpool but I can't travel for health reasons.  I guess I'm going to have to get my wider family interested then send them over to do the leg work!  My maternal line is also in N. Ireland and I'm stuck in the previous generation with them too!

Thanks for your interest! If your friend has any family history, I'd be thrilled to share it.

Lynne

Hi Ayla,

Thanks for the information.  I didn't have these addresses.

I've sent an email already and now I'm off to look at the website!

Hi all,

I've had no luck in my search so I'd just like to renew the topic if that's okay.

I've had no replies from Craigavon council/museum.  I was also given the name of a local Moneypenny whom I wrote to but with no reply  :(

I'm still hoping for any information on the Moneypenny's of Portadown and surrounding areas so if you can help me, I'd appreciate it.

thanks in advance!

Lynne,

I have found this undated directory for Tandragee showing James Moneypenny of Tandragee http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jassie/post/index-page21.html
