Govan 1872-1881 Mystery
« on: Monday 29 September 08 14:28 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone
I wonder if someone could help solve my problem which is as follows:-
My granny, Marion Downes Reid, was born 1870 in Govan. Her father was Thomas Campbell Reid and her mother was Agnes Cleland. She is on the 1871 census living with her older sister and her parents.
In 1881 she and her sister are living in Govan with Isabella Tainsh a widowed lady who appears to be no relation and they are described as ophans. There is no sign of their parents on the 1881 census. So what happened to them? I have looked on Scotlands People for their deaths without success. A child Thomas was born in 1872 but died infant. I would love to have this mystery solved
Regards
Aberdein

Have you checked the records on SP?  In Govan for that time period there are 2 records for an Agnes and 1 for a Thomas

Thanks Steve
I just don`t know where else I could look for these deaths, if thats what they are. Maybe cemetery records or church records which is hard to do from a distance

There is a death showing in 1872 in Govan for a Thomas Reid born that year which may well be the Thomas son indicated by Steve. Like all of you, can't see an obvious death for parents before 1881.

There is a record for a Thomas Campbell Reid dying in Glasgow in 1907

Maybe a census search for 1901 may help
