Hello:
I am looking for the family of DUNCAN MORRISON (1828 - 1871), who married ANN MC(MAC)MILLAN  (1844 -)in 1866.
She was from Killean (kintyre). They married in Greenock in 1866 and remained there, as far as we know.
Children include:
JAMES (1868-)
MAY (1880 - )
DUNCAN  went to Alberta
Catherine (died at birth)
Catherine 2 (1883 - 1955)
Jean (d, 1900)
Donald  went to Montana, then  to Alberta
Any additional information would be very useful
Thanks for any help
Vi Bain

Hello there,

I've just been looking on the IGI and there is no children between a Duncan Morrison and an Ann M[a]cMillan in Scotland. However, there is 4 children to a Duncan Morrison and Mary M[a]cMillan. I'm not sure if this is your family?

James Morrison, b. 1867 Killean
Mary Morrison, b. 1869 Killean
Jane Morrison, b. 1872 Killean
Daniel Morrison, b. 1874 Killean

There is also the marriage of a Duncan Morrison and Mary McMillan in 1866 Greenock. ???

Thank you for your reply.
I think it is not the same family. The person Ann McMillan has had a previous name also of McMurchie. (perhaps married twice?
The family had lived in Campbeltown, then Killean, then moved to Greenock where Duncan married Ann.
They have been very hard to track down.
My Husband has resorted to Scotland's People and has had some success.

Apologies, but I can't find any different on both the IGI and SP. Perhaps you could post some of the information you have, to help you find more about the family of Duncan and Ann.

This looks like the family in 1871:

John Morrison 50, head, Farming 1400 Acras Of A Hech 80 Are Arabb, b. Saddell, Argyleshire
Catherine Morrison 52, sister, b. Saddell, Argyleshire
Duncan Morrison 44, brother, b. Saddell, Argyleshire

James Morrison 3, nephew, b. Killean, Argyleshire
Mary Morrison 1, niece, b. Killean, Argyleshire
Duncan McAlbine 35, servant,

Address: Braids Farm, Killean and Kilchenzie

By 1881, Duncan is showing as head - everyone in the family showing as born in Killean:

Duncan Morrison 55, Farmer (Of 1500 Acres Of Wh 200 Arable Employing 2 Men & 1 Girl),
Mary Morrison    32
James Morrison 12
Mary Morrison    10
Jane Morrison    8

Duncan Morrison 2

The 1891 is fragmented. This is the most obvious for wife Mary (can't see Duncan Snr):

Mary Morrison    39, head, grocer, b. Killean
Duncan Morrison 12, b. Killean
Katie Morrison    8, b. Keppoch, Argyll

Address: 17, Colchester Squar, Lochgilphead, Glassary

There is also a Mary Morrison, 21 working in Kelvin Glasgow as a domestic servant in the Grant household.

I checked SP to see whether any Wills & Testament showed for either Duncan or brother John but couldn't easily see any,

Duncan's birth looks to have been slightly earlier than you have. Two children show on IGI, actual extract from the OPRs, to parents James Morrison and Mary McMurchy:

1. JAMES MORRISON Born 07 OCT 1819 Killean And Kilchenzie
2. DUNCAN MORRISON Born 07 SEP 1821 Killean And Kilchenzie, Argyll

You also have the other two siblings for Duncan, John and Catherine who showed in the earlier censuses.

There are also marriage/banns showing for parents - locations make sense given the birth of some of their children (Saddell and Killean):

James Morrison and Mary McMurchy: marriage/banns entries 05 MAR 1807 Killean And Kilchenzie and 28 FEB 1807 Saddell And Skipness, Argyll.
