John Carnegie Allan
« on: Friday 03 October 08 08:28 BST (UK) »
Hello RC's,

I am currently researching my gt gt grandfather, John Carnegie Allan, born in 1849.  He is the son of Katharine Carnegie, 1807 - 1881 and William Allan, born 1807.  John married Helen Weymms born 1854.  John was a ships carpenter.  My grt Grandmother Susan was born in 1880.  By 1891 Helen was widowed.  I have searched for his death certificate, but cannot find one for him.  (thought I had it, but it is not the right one.  The family were living in Bervie at this time.  Can anyone help  please.

KInd regards,
Lynda

Was this the certificate you found ?

Nothing came up when I entered the mother's maiden surname (Carnegie)  but when the unrecorded maiden  surname box was ticked the following was found:
John Allan died 1891 aged 42, St Andrew district, Edinburgh City.
The age ties in exactly with the birth year of 1849 but it is difficult to decide if it's worth following up.

I could kick myself, but I never thought of lookig at the Edinburgh one.  will have another look.  Thank you for your time once again and I will let you know how I get on.

Hi Lynda.  As there are 39 John Allans born in 1849 I think that  the death I mentioned could be any one of them.  Sorry about this.

Isles.

hi lynda/isles

1881 census

24 david st bervie kincardineshire

john(mrs) wemyss widow 52 born woodside aberdeen mill worker flaxmill
john(mrs) allan widow 26 daughter born bervie kincardine millworker flaxmill
susan a allan grand daughter 1 born bervie

susan allan born 1880 bervie kincardineshire on scotlandspeople
wonder if john allan was still alive when susan was born ?

they were married in 1877 and if john was susans father it narrows down a
possible death date

Hello Isles and Ev,

I have looked at all the death certs in scotland from 1879 - 1881 to no avail.  There were 2 on the Marine register, but not too sure about either.  If John was a ship's carpenter, do you think he would have been on the ships, or would he have been land based?

regards,
Lynda

Hi there,

I have just had a thought.  The two deaths on the 'Marine Register'.  Would they have been listed anywhere else with family details, ie wife and parents?

regards,
Lynda
