Kerrie,

I was accessing a Surname Index of C1871 today in my local library.... but that was before I read your posting.

Will have another go by end of week ( but I am sure someone else will provide your info sooner)

But in the meanwhile, let me stick my neck out and suggest that on C1881, your Picketts were not living in Longbenton.... well they were.. sort of.. but living within the territory of the "ancient" parish of Longbenton/Long Benton, and not in the "place" of Longbenton.

As populations rapidly increased in 1800s, Parishes were subdivided in smaller areas called "Townships",
( not a clever name, as there did not have to be a town involved... in Ireland the equivalent was/is a "Townland" )

Longbenton Parish was divided into 4 Townships, Longbenton itself, which was/is to the north of Newcastle, next to Gosforth,Killingworth, Weetslade and Walker, which was/is on banks of River Tyne.

So I think your gang were living at Walker, on the River Tyne, between Newcastle and Wallsend.

Some Record Officials continued to use old parish terminology, instead of using more up-to-date place names.

The Newcastle BMD web site shows the registration of a marriage in 1868 of a James Pickett and A Catherine Shannahan... at the Register Office. Also in 1869 there is a marriage registration for a James Pickett and a Mary J Black, at St Nicholas's Cathedral, Newcastle.

Same web site has the birth registration of a Mary Pickett in 1869.

The FreeBMD site shows the 1868 marriage registered in the June Quarter ( therefore marriage was from 1st april to 30th June). The 1869 marraige was reg in Sept Qtr.
