Branbyburn is still a farm:
put this grid reference into the o.s website   http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm   or similar and it will show you where it is (its actually named on the OS map) :)

Brandyburn Farm
Dalswinton
Dumfries and Galloway DG2 0XE

Grid reference NX 928 852

As for your other surnames, we have:

Scot     ? mortcloth        Carnsalloch    Apr 1744
Scot     Agnes, coffin                            Mar 1734

no Wauchope, but we have:

Wauch   Janet, mo-in-law to And. Bell, mortcloth       Duncow     July 1746
Wauch   Robert, mortcloth                                         Boat          June 1730

I'm not sure what 'boat' means but that is what it says for place, maybe he lived on a boat on the Nith?!? I'd love to know!

hi tracey,

thank you once again, its very interesting to view the os map, i hadn't thought about checking that out.  i wonder if 'boat' is an abbreviation of the place name 'boatrig'  which is north, north, west of brandburn.

i shall have to do a little digging to check out the names you have listed, they don't immediately fall into place on the tree, but are looking very likely.

these local place names are really interesting dead man's hole, doctor's knowle, wild cat glen etc.  i shall have to take a trip up there at some point i think and have a look around.

thanks again tracey, regards purlin

My pleasure Purlin :)

I must confess I don't know the area North of Dalswinton too well, but the area south I know very well, but I did pass Brandyburn every day on the bus on my way to school ;)

If you do take a trip up I see by google searching Brandyburn let out a self catering flat! Amazing what you can find out on google!!

did you know the farm as brandyburn then, when you were passing to school.  is it a large farm? it seems to have been occupied, perhaps tenanted by members of the family over quite a period.

yes google is a real educator isn't it.  i checked out the self catering flat advert.  that would be a master stroke wouldn't it to stay there, thanks for that.

kind regards Tracey, thank you

I don't remember it as a massive farm, but it had a sign at the road end, which is why I knew where it was. Don't know much more than that unfortunately.  :-\

Thanks for all the information Tracey.

Nathaniel is a name I have been trying to make some connection with for quite a while.
