Crisis over graveyard maintenance
« on: Thursday 09 October 08 07:51 BST (UK) »
(Hope this is the right board for this)

From the BBC website:

"A conference is taking place to discuss what is described as a crisis in the maintenance of graveyards.

English Heritage says Britain has the world's best graveyard heritage, but that gravestones are deteriorating through weathering and vandalism.

The meeting in Oxford will discuss how the neglect of the sites also means a decay of their social history............................................"

Stable door and bolted come to mind on this one.

Oh, really??? Have they only just realised this? Don't they follow the media? Goodness knows, there's been enough of an outcry about this for years! Someone should tell them to have a look at the topics on here!

Scottish graveyards, I have found, are far better maintained than in England.

However, Fife Council at the moment are getting rid of a lot of "memorabilia" in their cemeteries, and this has sparked a bit of outrage. The council are wanting to remove edging and other grave surroundings, regardless of the fact the council would have given permission for these items in the first place!
