I rang for Elizabeths birth cert today I am not sure yet what it is but they said its not John

Why would John be named as the father on her marriage cert
Would be perhaps be a mistake Is it worth checking with the Register office I cant think of another reason

There are various possibilities.  A common one is that she was illegitimate and no father is named on her birth certificate.  When illegitimate girls married they often gave a father's name, made-up or sometimes the man who they believed to be their father.  Another is that she was adopted into a relative's family.  Let us know the details on the birth certificate when you get it.

Hi There Jenny........

I have searched for a couple of hours , and can't find either David or Phoebe on the 1881 census, or their deaths . It could be that they died , and Maria was taken on by a uncle ?

David Hailstone / Phoebe Elizabeth Wright / June quarter 1874 / Hull / vol 9d page 397

This will at least give David's fathers name , and we can check and see if he had a brother John !!

Regards

JeannieR

Bit puzzled about what you said was on the birth certificate.  Was Maria just born in the workhouse or was that their address?  If the father was a labourer it's unlikely that they were actually inmates - unless the parents were already separated.  I'm with JeannieR - get the marriage certificate.  If Maria was in Cardiff as a boarder in 1891, when only 15, it suggests that the couple had broken up.  Have you looked for a marriage between Phoebe and someone else?

I have looked I looked for Newton as Marias sister was Elizabeth Newton Hailstone or Lizzie Newton  on the census in Cardiff in 1901 with her sister Maria who had married William Fouracre
Marie was a boarder in a school in Cardiff in 1891 She was stone deaf
The birth cert says under where she was born Sculcoates Union Work house .

Elizabeth Newton Hailstone was born in Dec quarter 1881 in Sculcoates 9d, 188
Her birth certificate would confirm Maria's parentage.

Could she not have had a different father with Newton as a Surname as shown on the 1901 Cencus in Wales where she is know as Lizzie Newton
The registry office have told me her father is not John as I was going to purchase it but bought Marias instead So grateful for your help
