Light House men in Cornwell
« on: Saturday 18 October 08 11:31 BST (UK) »
Could anyone tell me if there is anywhere you can look up lists of light house men.  I have children born in 1816 and 1819 whose fathers name is listed as a light house man.  There are two fathers names, but I think they are the same man.  One is Jesse Trembath of Bosscaswell in 1816, and the other is Giles Trembath of Trevellland in 1819.  The wife in both is Ann Ayres (Airs).  Maybe also someone can tell me if Jesse and Giles means the same in Cornwall.  I only had a marriage for Giles Trembath and Ann Airs in 1800, and no Jesse.  I think Giles died before 1841 census.

I would have thought That Trinity House would have held any records (should they survive).

Otherwise National Maritime Museum?

I live in Australia.  Do these people have internet sites, or do you have to go there

I found a site for Trinity House - Personnel at Lighthouses in England, Wales and Channel Isles 1790-1911.  It has a large index of Lighthouse keepers and fogmen.  Sadly my Giles Trembath wasn't on the list.

Can I assume this is St Just In Penwith and not St Just In Roseland?

Baptisms from the IGI batch for St Just in Penwith P020311
parents Giles & Ann
Ann  12/10/1800
William 28/9/1814
Jane 23/4/1819
Mary 17/2/1811

parents Jesse & Ann
Jesse 14/10/1805
Eliza 3/8/1816

parents Jesse & Elizabeth
Thomas 23/8/1807

marriage from batch M020311
Giles Trembath married Ann Trembath 24/5/1800
Her surname appears as Airs only in submitted entries on the IGI.
No marriage for a Jesse to Ann or Elizabeth in this batch.

Possible baptism?  Ann Trembath bp 9/9/1781 to William & Ann batch P020311
Burial of Giles Trembath aged 53 in  December 1829

1841 census HO107/144/8 folio 42 pg 25
Trewellard, St Just in Penwith
Ann Trembath 60 government annuity 60
Jane 20 work at a tin stamping mill
both born in county

The government annuity is good as there will be records somewhere. Most lighthouses were controlled by Trinity House. Their records are at the Guildhall Library in London

he might have worked at one of these

You can get copies of the parish records from the archives in Truro. They might make things clearer

I did have most of that information, except for the internet sites at the bottom.  I have always been of the opinion that Giles and Jessie are the same person - none of the childrens birth clash - they all follow on.  The birth for Ann Trembath - Ann is an Airs not a Trembath.  Thank you all for your help.
