Archibald McMillan
« on: Sunday 19 October 08 10:57 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to find a birth for Archibald McMillan he was my paternal grandfather. I have the marriage certificate for him and my grandmother Margaret Riddle McDonald. They were married on the 31st of December 1918 at the Manse Bathgate, but I cannot find a birth for Archibald as I don't Know where he was born.  The names under the parent section on the marriage cert are (Donald McMillan 35, Madras Street, Inverness) and (Margaret nee Fairweather, Bridgend, Bathgate). I also have the marriage certificate for them  and the names of parents for Donald are (Malcolm, Police Seargent, Inverness) and (Maria nee McDonald from Denny) and I have lots of census information for various Donald McMillan's and seem to be going round in circles. Have you any suggestions that might help me solve this mystery. ???

Does the marriage cert show his age?

Hi Daval 57, yes his age was 18 at the time so he would have been born around 1900

Sorry kerrbabs.
I've been searching various records for quite a while now.
Apart from parents marriage in 1896, no joy.

According to SP, there are 42 Archibald McMillans born in Scotland 1899 to 1901.

You could view every one of them in the hope you'll find the correct one but it would cost you £42 unless you are lucky.

Obviously, you would start with 1900 and work outwards.

I'm not sure whether you are aware, but Scottish records at this time show names of both parents.

I apologise if you know all this.

I wish you luck.
Dave

Hi "Daval57" I have the full list of the Archibalds born at that time and have checked out five or six of them to no joy but I will persist and see what I come up with, ( quite a journey but I am enjoying it ) One of my cousins thought that someone told her that Archie was posibly Donalds sisters son but she can't be sure of the fact or who told her about it.

....... she can't be sure of the fact or who told her about it.

That sums up a lot of the 'facts' we follow.

Hi Dave, The fact of this matter is my cousin has only a vague memory of who told her and if there is any truth to it. The only true fact is that any one who could have verified it will be long gone. We never Knew our grandfather or any of his family, My father was the oldest son and neither he nor his two brothers had any idea of where their dad went to as they were only little boys when he left them.

Hi Kerrbabs and Dave,

My first thought was to look at the 1901 census. I found Margaret McMillan (nee Fairweather) staying with her parents at Bridgend, Bathgate. However, no-one called Archibald was at that address, nor was her husband Donald. I then looked for Donald and/or his parents. Found Malcolm and Maria McMillan in Glasgow. No Donald or Archibald there either!! Hopefully someone with an Ancestry sub can take a look - census results on SP are just too expensive. :(

Hi Hume24, Thank you for the reply to my post on Archibald Mcmillan. I have the marriage cert of Donald and Margaret 24th/06/1896 and the usual residence for Donald is 35, Madras Street Inverness.
I have tried searching the 1881-1901 census records on Scotlands People but unfortunately the ones that I paid for were totally wrong. I am going out to buy some more vouchers tommorrow so if you could advice me the best way to get results as I have a pile of certificates of different McMillan's. Or is this the norm just Case of elimination?
Cheers Kerrbabs
