Family History
« on: Friday 24 October 08 13:06 BST (UK) »
I am trying to research my family tree - with very little information. One road is that my Mother's Mother maiden name was Gelardt and may have been from either Poland or Lithwainia. I would therefore welcome any advise or information about this. I believe that my Grandmother's Father may have jumped ship in Liverpool and probabley moved to Thatto Heath St Helens.

On my Grand Fathers side his name was Moses and could have been from Woolton. I have been informed he went to school with the then Lord Woolton. He started a green grocers in Thatto Heath, St Helens.

We need you to clarify your original posting.

Which of your two grandparents are you talking about?
Do you know their full names?
When were the people that you are talking about born and married? Approximate dates would help.
You of course need to avoid too much detail of people who are still alive.
Was your mother from Eastern Europe or her parents?
To trace people as much detail as possible is needed.

Thank you for the quick reply

I'm starting with my mother's family, who are sadly (with the exception of one Aunty who is in her 80's) are dead.

Her Mother was (please forgive any spelling errors) Williamina Mary Gelardt (who's family is from Eastern Europe) It's her Farther I've been told jumped ship I guess in Liverpool. Her Father was called John James Moses.

Many years ago I was related to all the Moses in the St Helens telephone directory. They have all gone now.

As far as dates are concerned my Mother was born in 1917 so I can only guess her parents must have been born in the late 1800's and I dare say her Grandfather mid 1800's.

When it comes to my Father I've even less information other than his family might have come from Bolton. He was born in 1914 and worked down the mines from the age of 14. His name was Henry (but known as Harry) Brown.

It's worse than an needle in a haystack sorry to say.

Try to get your aunt to write down as much as she remembers, no matter how trivial she thinks it is.  Living relatives are a wealth of information, and unfortunately when they pass away, all that history passes with them.
RIP 1949-10th January 2013
