1861 - Walmsley, Holmes Chapel
« on: Saturday 25 October 08 17:25 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm on the verge of pulling out what little hair I have left! I'm looking for James Walmsley and family. I've found them in the 1851 but no matter where I look I can't find them in the 1861, nor can I find a death for him or his wife.

James was born abt 1799 in Holme Chapel (or Holme in Cliviger - both same place), Lancashire, married Mary in about 1824. In the 1851 census they were living at Smithy Bridge, in the Chapelry of Littleboro.

In the 1851 census he was listed as a 52 year old Fire Brick Maker, living with Mary 51, and 7 children. Has I mentioned earlier I've looked from 1852 to 1870 for a death of either him or Mary and again drawn a blank.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Nigel

Down-under,

The John Walmsley you've found is the son of the James & Mary I'm looking for. His son Lawrence is my Gt Gt G/dad.

It's James & Mary I'm unable to find either by Census or any other means.

============================================================

Wozzle,

I haven't discounted those as I'd not seen them, but now you've told me about them, "I'll unleash the hounds" and see what we can sniff out.

Many thanks to you both for your efforts I'll report back and let you both know how I've got on.

Regards

Nigel

Wozzle,

Just a quick question, without ordering the Certificates how can I check which is the right one?

unless you know who registered the death i am not sure if there is any other way of finding if one of these is the right one apart from sending for all certs(bit expensive though)
you could say to only go ahead with the death cert if marys age at death tallies with her age in the 1851 census
maybe somone else knows of another way to cut down on the expense.

Hi

I know it's a long time since this thread was originally published but I can tell you now that James Walmsley died 25th June 1853. The executors of his will were Mary Walmsley, his widow, James Walmsley his son & Laurence Crossley of Cliviger, his brother-in-law. I have a copy of his will.

Hi Tom

Only just found this site. Believe that the James Walmsley here is my paternal 4x gt grandad. I have a family tree linking me directly through his 2nd son, John, born 1826. I'd love to have a copy of the will if you could.

Thanks

Martyn
