Arnold Family Tree
« on: Saturday 25 October 08 23:19 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to trace my great grandparents. There names were John Arnold and Laura Epsey Edgington (maiden name) and I know they were living in Crownpoint Road Camlachie Glasgow around 1906 which was when my grandfather William was born. Laura may have been a housekeeper for some doctors in the area and john maybe worked in the carpet factory. The family moved in the 1920/30s to KIdderminster Worcestershire to find work. William had brothers and sisters.. Any info on Camlachie or Mile End would be greatfully received.
Thanks Saral

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Here is Laura's birth registration

Laura Epsey Edgington September qtr 1871  Worcester  Volume: 6c  Page: 285

I can't find her on any census from 1881-1901.  Do you know her parents names?

Did she marry in Scotland as I cannot see an English marriage

Hi Saral.
Welcome.

So what sort of info on Camlachie and Mile End are you looking for?
There is an abundance of photos available for the area if you have specific street names.

The carpet factory would very probably have been Templetons.  An amazing building which still stands but is now a business centre.  I've attached a link for that.  One of my favourite buildings in Glasgow.

Here's a few links* but come back if you have specific questions.

As far as tracing John and Laura are concerned, do you have any more info about them and the other children, other than what you've posted (and what Carole has now added)?
Post everything you know, it gives us clues where to look and avoids duplication of work you may have done already.

Dave

Hi Saral,

Welcome to Rootschat!

I had a wee look on the 1881 Cencus for any Arnold families living in Glasgow and found one couple living in the Gorbals (a stones' throw from Templeton's Carpet Factory which Dave mentioned)

Obviously they might not be any relation to your Arnolds but the details are as follows:

Living at 80 Main (Street?), Gorbals
Head, Charles Arnold age 24, Spirit Salesman born England
Wife, Emma Arnold age 26 born England

Anne

That's a good shout Anne.

Arnold is not exactly a common name in Scotland.
According to SP, from 1870 to 1920 there were only 86 Arnold births in Glasgow, 7 of them in Camlachie*.

Saral, are you aware of ScotlandsPeople?  (SP)

Added - the numbers quoted are the GROS references, GROS being General Register Office for Scotland.

I apologise if you know this stuff but even if you do, it might help others.

Thanks for such a quick reply.

I hope I am using this correctly.  Its all new to me.

I do not know lauras parents names but I have found out that they married in Kidderminster in 1891.

How they came to be living in Glasgow though is a mystery.

Hi,
Thanks for such a quick response.

On my grandads birth certificate (william) it says they were living at 59 Crownpoint Road Camlachie in 1903.
Would this property still exist?

My grandad did have brothers and sisters, their names that I know of are Alfred, Jack,Edwin,Laura and Hilda but I am not sure of their birthdates.
His mum Laura was born in Worcester and they married in Kidderminster in 1891 but I can not seem to find out where John was born or how they were living in Glasgow. Perhaps he was from Scotland.

If you have any photos of Crownpoint Road or surrounding areas I would be most interested.
Thanks again
Saral

can someone please help me. I sent my first message  and had some very good replys but I am not sure how to reply back to them. Could someone tell me what to press and what I should be in. Sorry  I am very new to this and must be quite thick. I think I pressed the quote button.
