McGlennon
« on: Wednesday 05 November 08 12:16 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with the following:

I am looking for information on an Eleanor McGlennon b.20.8.1897.  Eleanor married her cousin Geoffrey Gosnell (b.5.7.1904 Cork) in Pontipridd 26.12.1925.  I believe that the family came from Ireland but dont know where to start.  I know that Irish Ancestry is hard to follow and find and I am hoping that someone can guide me further.

Eleanors mum and dad were Christopher and Eleanor and Eleanor had a brother called Albert but this is all I have to go on at the moment.

To research relatives in Ireland you have to work back through the available records step by step just like any other research.

Do you know where Eleanor McGlennon was born (Ireland, Wales, etc.)? What about her parents- do you have their marriage certificate (it should list fathers' names and occupations).

You have an exact date of birth for Geoffrey Gosnell. Do you know the names of both parents and his exact place of birth? If not, you can order his birth certificate which will give you those details. He is too young to be listed in 1901 census but his parents should be there. Was the family in Ireland in 1911? If so, that census should list Geoffrey, his parents and maybe some siblings.

I am researching Glennons/all name variations here in Ireland. The site is in its early stage of development however I can see a Christopher McGlennon married in CorK in the last quarter of 1895 and the births of a number of children including an Eleanor Mary Mc Glennon 1896 and Abert Christopher McGlennon 1899. Have a look at www.theglennons.com and communicate with me on the forum there

i have found the following info (in my own family history) on a christopher and eleanor who had a son albert, there is no mention of a daughter eleanor maybe records were lost or never filed or possibly this is not the couple your looking for.

Christopher Robert McGlennon  (Born abt. 1870)

Christopher Robert McGlennon married Eleanor May Lake on 21st November 1895 at St Anne Shandon Parish Church in Cork City. Christopher, a bachelor was of full age (over 21) and a Clerk by profession, his address being given as 81 Roche’s Buildings.
Eleanor was a spinster of full age, her address given as Infirmary Road, Cork.
The wedding was witnessed by an Annie Ward and Clara Lake.

Christopher Robert and Eleanor May had the following children:

1)   Albert Christopher born 1899
2)   Ethel Rose born 1901
3)   George Albert born 1902 (died 1903).
4)   Ernest born 1906

Christopher McGlennon had a brother John McGlennon who was married to Clara Lake the sister of Eleanor wife of Christopher. Clara and Eleanor's father was Robert Lake a Policeman.

Christopher and John McGlennon's father was John McGlennon a policeman (RIC).

Did Christopher and Eleanor move from Cork to Wales in the early 1900's?

There was a John McGlennon who enlisted in the RIC 23rd Sept. 1853 age 17.  His Registered Number was 174624 and he was a native of Kings Co  (Offaly).  He resigned 10th July 1860.  Is this one and the same John Mc Glennon Father of John and Christopher ?

John McGlennon, Policeman was probably the father of John Charles and Christopher but I have his date of resignation as 16th April 1877. Here are some details:

John McGlennon, Police Constable (Born 1836)

Research into the Royal Irish Constabulary Service Index produced the following:

John McGlenon, Constable, Number 17(4?)624.
Age on Joining - 17yrs.
Height – 5’ 73/4”
Religion – Protestant
D.O.B.  - 1836
Date of Appointment –  20/9/1853
Native County – Kings County (Offaly)
Recommended by – Sub Inspector Somerville
Trade – Labourer

Service Details:   Limerick
         Cork East
1st Class Sub.Constable 1st April 1854
Acting Constable 1st March 1863
Constable 1st June 1864
Date of Resignation –  16th April 1877
Annual Pension Amount - £47

This would appear to be the police record of John (probably the son of James and Hestor McGlennon?).

Interestingly John’s county of birth is given as Kings County now Offaly although in 1836 James would have been serving in Queens County. Presumably his home was in neighbouring Kings County or perhaps this was the home of Hestors parents?

James McGlennon  (Born 1814)

The earliest member of the McGlennon family who lived in Cork that I have evidence of is James McGlennon who was a member of the Irish Constabulary. James moved to County Cork with his family around September 1843.

His service record is as follows:

James McGlennon, Constable, Number 808.
Age on Joining - 17yrs.  Height – 5’ 7”  Religion – Protestant
D.O.B.  - 1814   Date of Appointment – 1/12/1831
Native County – Queens County (Laois)
Recommended by – Rev. H. Caulfield  C.L.K.  (Prot’t Clergyman)
Trade – Farmer
County of Wife – Queens County
Service Details:   Kilkenny      0.6
         Queens Co 11.4
         Cork East   16.8      (Constable 1st June 1846)
Fined £1-0-0   28th September 1849
Date of Resignation – 1st June 1860
Annual Pension Amount - £34

James and Hester McGlennon had the following children?

1)   John born around 1836
2)   Mary born around 1840
3)   Joseph born around 1843
4)   William born around 1845
5)   James born around 1851
6)   Henry born around 1853
7)   Rebecca who married a Mr Young
8)   Another daughter who married a Mr Mack

What is your interest in the McGlennon family?
