Canadian Railway
« on: Sunday 09 November 08 21:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone

There is a rumour in our family, that one of our ancestors became Chairman of the Trans Canadian Railways, or Canadian Pacific Railways.  I have found definate records of my family (HILSDEN) emmigrating to Canada, and coming back to visit...I have also found a service record of an Eric Hilsden, who signed up for the Canadian Expeditionary Forces.  So I know they did emmigrate.

Where can I find records relating to the railway?

This would have been the early 1900's.

Thanks,

On the 1911 Census, I found a Harry, Marion and Violet Hilsden who immigrated in 1905.

You can also check the 1901 & 1911 census using "soundex" as well.

Although I have not found anything relating to the railways in Canada, you can check for relatives at the National Archives Canada site.

Also, if the Eric Hilsden is related to you, you can order the full file from the Archive. It may give you more information.

Janice, you've done a lot of work!  Thanks.  I had found the census's alright, and the record for Eric, who was my
greath grandfather's cousin(!).

I'll have a look through all the other links too!  Thanks so much!

Library and Archives Canada holds records of railways in Canada. You can start your search here as well:

Seems you will have alot of material to go through. Good luck and enjoy the research.

Thanks Kathleen & Dannybou...I love having lots of things to rummage through.  Even if I don't find exactly what i'm looking for, it can give a sense of what things were like!
