1841 Census LONG Please.
« on: Monday 10 November 08 14:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Apologies, this is long winded.
I have been searching the 1841 Census in vain for :

Elizabeth 'Eliza' LONG   c1837/8  Merthyr Tydfil
Sister?      Ann LONG     c1834/5  Merthyr Tydfil.
 and Eliza's father :
Henry LONG c1810? Iron Miner.  Deceased by 1862, according to Eliza/Elizabeth's Wedding certificate.

Details I have for my Eliza and Ann in 1851:

Cellars Merthyr Tydfil
-----------------------------
Ann MORGAN  Head  Widow   78               born Glamorgan Nicholas
William MORGAN      Son         31  Labourer                          Llandaff
Ann LONG     Grand Dau      16  House Servant                 Merthyr
Eliza LONG         Grand Dau   12  House Servant                 Merthyr
William LONG      Grand Son     9                                    Found him in later Census no clues.

After not finding the girls in 1841 I looked for their Grandmother Ann MORGAN in 1841.
Ages a bit out but this one looked the most likely  :

Hamlet of Llandaff, Parish of Llandaff   1841
----------------------------------------------
Ann MORGAN       59          Both born in County.
William MORGAN 18  Lab

Two pages before are :

John MORGAN                25  Lab     both born in County
Susannah MORGAN       25
ANN MORGAN                  5
ELIZABETH MORGAN       3

//
LONG   :) shot perhaps but I cant help wondering if the MORGAN girls were the LONG ones in 1851?
I cant find John and Susannah Morgan in 1851?
Someone kindly looked up any possible Marriages in Llandaff Cathedral but nothing.

1851-1871 The LONG girls are always down as born in Merthyr Tydfil and lived together or next door.

Notes:  All I could come up with for a Henry LONG in the 1841 Census and none seem to fit:
1841 Census
An Henry and Margaret LONG in Bishopstown, Elizabeth aged 6 but no Ann.and this Henry is still around in 1871.
or Henry LONG    24 Accountant with Elizabeth LONG no children  Swansea.
and Henry LONG  35  M L with two children  John and Ann DAVID in Coychurch.

There are a couple of Irish LONG families in Merthyr but there does not appear to be any connection.

1861-1881    Eliza has several romance's and the children are recorded with various surnames.
I have the details but would make this even longer..
Eliza marries a David JONES in 1862.
My Great Grandmother Mary Ann was known as nee JONES but her birth is registered as LONG.

1891 - 1901 +    Eliza and daughters living in Brynmawr.

Thanks for reading and would appreciate any help.

Thank you
Reyz.

Update :  Wedding Witnesses of Eliza LONG and David Jones were an Ann THOMAS and David MATHEWS.
On the I.G.I. A David Mathews married a Mary LONG 11 April 1832 in Merthyr Tydil. Wonder if the Mary is a relative of Eliza ?  Think I have found them in 1861, living not too far away but no clues..
I have sent for a birth certificate for an Elizabeth LONG born 1838, so hoping that is my Eliza and may help.  :)

Hello again

Re the last paragraph in the posting above.
The birth certificate for Elizabeth LONG' has arrived  :). But still stuck.

1838 Elizabeth LONG born  at  'Jacksons Bridge, Upper Merthyr Tydfil'.This area fits in with where she lived till about mid 1880's and her known daughters born.  :)

Father Henry Long  a Miner of Dowlais.    Mother Margaret LONG formerly JONES.There is a marriage on the I.G.I. for 1832 that fits.
Also a christening for Ann LONG in 1835 that fits for her sister.

1841 Census Enumeration district 22 has 'Iron Bridge' page 14 onwards. I wonder if that is actually Jackson's Bridge as looking on the Internet that  area could fit?  No one there that would appear to be my lot .
If I am wrong can anyone tell me the correct Enumeration district for 'Jackson Bridge' please?

1841 Census for Dowlais -  in case Father Henry LONG is still in that area.
I cant find Dowlais on the 1841, can anyone point me in the correct direction please.

I have ruled out a Henry and Margaret LONG in Oystermouth Swansea, as my Henry LONG is deceased by 1862. And none of their children lead to my Eliza and her sister Ann in later Census.

Elizabeth LONG is Elizabeth on Certificates and 'Eliza' on the Census.

Sorry tried to keep this short.
Appreciate any help, thank you.
Reyz.

Hi Reyz,

Henry LONG m. Margaret JONES 20 October 1830 at Merthyr Tydfil.

I've found two children:
William LONG, baptised 2 October 1833, address Pontmorlais, MT
Ann LONG, baptised 13 December 1835 MT

There are no Henry or Margaret LONG's anywhere near Merthyr in the 1841 Glamorgan census. Nor are there any children of the correct names/ages. It would appear that the family had moved out of the Glamorgan registration districts before the census, or that their census record was lost / illegible / uncompleted.

Good luck,
Lee.

Hi Lee

Now I am wondering if my theory they are the MORGAN girls in Llandaff is correct but perhaps grasping at straws there?

Many thanks  :)  for taking the time to look and for your comments.

best wishes
Reyz.

Hi Reyz,

Margaret LONG, of Jackson's Bridge, buried 4 March 1848 at Merthyr Tydfil, aged 38.
Death probably registered 1Q 1848 Merthyr Tydfil 26 425.

Henry LONG, of Jackson's Bridge, buried 10 April 1848 at Merthyr Tydfil, aged 40.
Death probably registered 2Q 1848 Merthyr Tydfil 26 342.

Any help?
Lee.

Update:  I may have found the reason that Eliza LONG and family cannot be found on the 1841 Census.

1851 and 1861 Eliza and sister Ann lived at  :   Cellars and  the China Pontstorehouse area of Merthyr Tydfil.
Looking at the 'South Wales Police History' Site, these areas were 'No Go' in the 1840's.
If the Police had trouble entering the area, I cant imagine a Census Enumerator would be very welcome....

So solved the query I think, thanks to all who looked.  :)

Hi Reyz,

The area where the LONG's lived sounds as if it could also have been the sort of area where diseases would have thrived. This perhaps explains why the deaths of Henry and Margaret were so close together - something nasty going around. They died about a year before the big cholera epidemic hit Merthyr.

Regards,
Lee.
