Welcome to RC.

There is only 1 William Gray that died in W Lothian in 1950 age 78.
That was in Linlithgow.  GROS reference 668/00 0069
The only place you can get a copy of the record online would be through ScotlandsPeople
It'll cost you £10 to order so non't order it unless your sure its him.
I'll look for the birth.

We need to narrow it down a bit to find birth.
Do you know when and where he was born?

SP address is http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You could be in luck!
Between 1871 and 1873 there is only 1 William Gray born in the whole of Ayrshire.
He was born 1872 in Kilmarnock.  Ties in with age of man that died in W Lothian in 1950.
GROS reference 597/00 0338

It would cost you 5 credits (£1) to view on SP. Minimum purchase is 30 credits (£6) but if you are starting out on tracing Scottish rellies, you'll use that in no time.

Unless you can visit Register House in Edinburgh or The Mitchell or Park Circus in Glasgow, you'll have to use SP.

If you need guidance, I'm happy to try and help.

Do you know great grandmother's name or have her marriage to William?  The marriage record will show their parents names which will confirm if we have the correct person.

HI Dave, sorry for not replying promptly but my other half has been active on the same ID you may have noticed. I have made a little progress with W Gray,
his second wife was Agnes Hastings who died before him.In the 1881 cencus
I find him in an institution called " st Marnock street reformarey kilmarnock "and no sign of his parents. he is 8 years old so I am well confused .  ? did they die  or what. OJ
