Have you checked his marriage cert to Helen Dingwall to see what it says about his parents? Were they John Gray and Margaret McKenna who had the following children:

1. HUGH GRAY Birth: 29 NOV 1867 Kilmarnock
2. JAMES GRAY Birth: 09 JAN 1870 Kilmarnock
3. WILLIAM GRAY Birth: 09 APR 1872 Kilmarnock - mother showing as McKerron
4. JOHN RUSSELL GRAY  Birth: 18 MAY 1874 Kilmarnock

The parents'  marriage (if the right couple) shows on IGI as a submitted entry:

JOHN RUSSELL GRAY
Parents:   HUGH GRAY and MARGARET RUSSELL
Spouse:     MARGARET MC KENNA
Marriage: 05 AUG 1867 in Kilmarnock
Husband Age at Marriage: 20
Wife Age at Marriage: 16

Their 1871 census entry:

John Gray 21, coal miner, b. Kilmarnock
Margh Mck Gray 19, b. Kilmarnock
James Gray 1, b. Kilmarnock

Address: 10 College Wynd, Kilmarnock

Alongside that 1881 entry for a William Gray, 8, is also a James aged 12 also born Kilmarnock.

There is a possible death showing in Kilmarnock in 1875 for a John Gray b. 1848 - maybe James' father? Can't see a corresponding death for mother Margaret up to 1881 though  :-\

Can't see anything for mother Margaret's 'crime' at the National Archives of Scotland site which carries some details of criminal proceedings.

I think in your position I would investigate poor relief applications for the children James and William  leading up to their time at the Ragged and Industrial School in Kilmarnock. There was a recent post on the school not very long ago www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,341203.0.html

As you will see, the actual records for the school look to have been destroyed  :'( but the way to proceed may be through the poor relief application route. Unfortunately with the current relocation of offices for the Ayrshire Archives, you  may have to wait some months to proceed down this route.

Have a look at the link for the Mitchell Library to see what these poor relief records may contain, fascinating film  :)

That's a long stint for mother Margaret  :o. She still shows as a prisoner in 1891:

Margaret Grey, 38, Bonnet Knitter, b. Kilmarnock Prisoner at H M Prison Bath Place , Ayr.

Can't easily see an entry for Margaret in 1901.

There is a death showing for a Margaret Gray/McKenna b. 1853 in 1906 in Irvine which might be worthwhile you checking out. From William's two marriage certs., did parents show as alive/deceased?

This looks like William boarding in 1891:

David Lindsay 31, coal miner, b. Coatbridge
Elizabeth Lindsay 27, b. Boness, Linlithgow
Nellie Lindsay6
Agnes Lindsay 4
David Lindsay 2
Wm Gray 18, boarder, coal miner, b. Kilmarnock

Address: 166 Buchanna St, Coatbridge

In 1901, looks like he is boarding with his brother James:

James Gray 31, coal miner, b. Kilmarnock
Elizabeth Gray 27, b. Kilmarnock
Mary Gray 16, daughter (age may be mistranscribed?), b. Kilmarnock
William Gray 9, b. Kilmarnock
James Gray Junr 7, b. Kilmarnock
William Gray 28. boarder, coal miner, b. Kilmarnock

Address: 28 Green Street, Kilmarnock

There are a number of lodgers also showing at the same address.

Were there any children from his marriage to Helen in Coatbridge? The original image would confirm his marital status.

Hi Weed

So the Mary Gray, 16, in the 1901 census, who I thought may have had her age mis-transcribed is likely to be Willam's daughter, age 6?

Sorry to drag up an old post, but I'm quite sure that part of the Gray family mentioned are also part of my Family Tree, with Hugh Gray and Margaret Russell being my Great, Great, Great, Grand Parents on my father's side.
I'm hoping that Weed or MonicaL may be able to confirm or refute this.
