I should have mentioned this is Vol. 1, Old Churchyard and Church:

Plot numbers: 19/18 & 20/10

ERECTED BY ROBERT LEISHMAN/NEWBATTLE
In memory of Helen Shanks, Lasswade, his daughter
who died 21st Jan 1881 aged 24 years.
Also Richard his son who died 9th May 1888, aged 20
years,
Also Agnes Hardie Leishman, Galadean Hill, Newtongrange
who died 4th July 1890 aged 16 years,
Also David Leishman Gallowdean Hill, died 4th March 1891
aged 18 years,
The above Robert Leishman died 24th August 1894,
Acre, Newbattle aged 63 years;
Also Mary, Newbattle, wife of George Caldwell and beloved
daughter of above who died 19th April 1905 aged 40 years;
Also Mary Murray, Monkswood, wife of the above Robert
Leishman, 26th Feb 1906, aged 75 years.

This one is recorded in the back under no Lair:

Richard Leishman, aged 6 weeks, Hillhead, interred Nov. 4th 1862

It is possible your relative may be in the next Vol. Also, I've discovered
many of my relations who died in Newbattle were taken back to
their parish of birth for burial. This surprised me.
Here is the website for this booklet:

Forgot to say, there are 100's of Thomsons. Maybe Janet was buried without her maiden name. If you could
give me specific names of other family members, husband, children etc and dates, she still might be there
somewhere.

Hi Elaine

many thanks for taking the time to check on the Leishman surname,no connection at the moment but maybe a connection in the future.

somewhere.

I cannot supply enough info on Janets husband Frank or their 14children but appreciate the offer.I off to check my tree incase I have missed anybody for you to look up ;) I may be back asking for more.

Elaine:
Would you have any information on Abraham Archibald who died in 1834 or his wife Marjory (m.s. Robertson) - death date unknown.   Abraham was buried on the 21 of November 1834 in Newton.

This is only a possibility but worth a go if the Newbattle records go back to the early/mid 1800's.

Looking for John Thomson (sorry, saw your previous note on that surname), and his wife Euphemia Thomson, nee Nicol. I have no approx deaths on either, however, both were born Newbattle, he abt 1769, and she abt 1773. Their six children were also born Newbattle. Euphen 1795, Janet 1796, Margaret 1798, Marion 1800, Helen 1802 and John 1805. So I presume parents died sometime after 1805, and probably(?) before 1870.

Hope that helps, but if too difficult, not to worry.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner. I never received an email notice about your post and just happened to take a look tonite. Yes I do have Abraham Archibald's COD and he is also in my tree:

Name: ARCHIBALD   Abraham
DOD: 18-Nov-1835
Age: 59
Address: Redrow   Newton MLN
COD: Asthma
Info: Father of Archibald Archibald
DOB: 21-Nov-1835
POB: Newton MLN

Also wife Marjorie:

Name: ROBERTSON   Marjorie
DOD: 02-Apr-1854
Age: 78
POD: North Leith
COD: Old Age
Info: Mother of Robert. Archibald
DOB: 04-Apr-1854
POB: Newton MLN

There are so many mining families with ASTHMA listed as COD, which is more likely "code" for black lung.
Abraham and Marjorie's grandson Abraham b. 1821 Newton (son of Andrew Archibald b. abt 1797) married a
Catherine Moffat who is in my Moffat tree.

Hope this helps,
Elaine
