All Saints Newcastle in early 1800s
« on: Friday 04 February 05 13:49 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know the extent of the parish of All Saints, Newcastle in the early 1800s? I have several generations born there and I know that many of the modern parishes are relatively new or were chapels of rest in those days. I do have a book on the churches in Newcastle diocese, but it does not allow me to work out the parish boundaries in those days.

Nick,

Go to >www.genuki.com< , go to "northumberland", go to "towns and parishes".

You will see map of Northumbrian Parishes ( but holding only parish names and their boundaries).

See also" church history" for the sub-divisions ( called "townships") of the parish, then the gradual break-up of the parish ( presumably as Newcastle population increased) into more modern parish divisions.

See also "civil registration" for Northumberland. Go to "newcastle upon tyne" for the areas covered ( Reg Districts were based on "ancient" parish boundaries).

Nick, also consider what relevance parish boundaries had to folk in early C19th. e.. did folk have to deal with the church of the parish within which they resided, or could they use the nearest church, which might be in a different parish ?
