SWEET family from Frome
« on: Sunday 16 November 08 05:47 GMT (UK) »
Mary Ann(e) SWEET was married in Aberystruth (Blaina, Wales) in 1851, father's name Charles SWEET and consistently in all census documents from 1851 gives her birthplace as Frome, Somerset. Mary Ann is living in Blaina in the 1851 census.
On IGI I see a Mary Ann SWEET bap 2 Mar 1828 at Badcox Lane Meeting House in Frome, parents Charles and Selina SWEET.  I cannot find any of this family in the 1841 census, although there is a Mary SWEET of the right age in Bedminster Bristol, and a Mary Ann SWEET in Nether Stowey.
Charles and Selina seem to be nowhere in 1841 or later - of course, they may have died by then, however there are two deaths which look useful - Selina SWEET death reg in Wellington, SOM 1842, and a Charles SWEET death also reg in Wellington in 1848..  I cannot see any other children of this couple.

Does anyone have any clues about finding Charles and Selina in 1841 or any siblings for Mary Ann?

Cheers, Judith

Badcox Baptist PRs only have Mary Ann 2 Mar 1828, which is a birthdate NOT a baptism. She was born Frome.

Thank you Eyesee.  I have found a marriage 17 Sep 1827 for Chareles SWEET and Selina BAGLAND at St John's Frome which would have to be the parents, I would think.

Good to know that the date given at Badcox Lane is the birth rather than the baptism and no siblings there.

Still no sign of any of them in 1841  :(

Thanks again, Judith

Still looking for this family after the record of Mary Ann's birth in 1828.  There is a death for a Selina BAGLAND in 1856, reg West Bromwich.  I know that Selina's brother Thomas was living in Handsworth (in W Bromich reg district) in 1851 and 1861 but no mention of a Selina.

Is this Selina SWEET using her maiden name?  And where was she in 1841 and 1851? And what happened to Charles?

Given the dates of the marriage and Mary Ann's birth it would seem likely that it was a "shotgun marriage".  Charles is listed as Mary Ann's father (occ labourer) at her marriage in 1851 but no indication as to wherther he was alive or not.

FreeREG has a Marriage 6 Oct 1836 Frome for Charles Sweet to Harriet Moore.
It does not state he is widowed though.

Jane from 1851 Census is actually James, same Mothers mn.

AS per 1841 Census there is no Mary/Mary Ann Sweet Birth Reg Gro Index c 1840 +/- 2 years with Mothers mn Moore.

Thanks, Trish - will have a good look later in the day. You have at least cleared up the 1856 death of Selina BAGLAND, registered W Bromwich as she is aged 2.  I think she is may be a niece of the Selina I'm looking for as Selina's brother Thomas was in Handsworth, Staffs in 1851 and 1861.

I think the Charles SWEET in Aberystruth in 1841 and 1851 may be somehow related to Mary Ann - perhaps a half-sibling or cousin as Mary Ann was also in Aberystruth in 1851 and it's one of the worst handwritten census entries I've ever seen. Mary Ann's surname is indexed as SMERT with a place of birth Frooper, Somerset and the other names in the household are just as bad!  However SWEET is not an uncommon name in Somerset.

Thanks again!
