Flett family in Wick
« on: Wednesday 19 November 08 22:44 GMT (UK) »
Help please.

I'm looking at a line that married into my mother's side of the family.

I have Henry (aka Harry) Flett marrying Diana Steven or Stiven on 7 January 1809 (from SP).
I also have 10 children from IGI / SP.

First child born 1811, last 1824.

I have Henry's death in 1866 age 85 so he's born c1781.  Alas, no details of parents where they should be.  Death registered by son in law so he probably just didn't know.

The marriage, all children's births and the death took place in Wick.

There are a few Fletts in Wick but the majority of Flett's are from Orkney.

I'm trying to find the birth for Henry/Harry Flett but I can't see anything close on SP.

Can anyone help please?  I'm stuck.

Dave

PS I'm also looking for info on Diana's parents but will make a separate post.
I'll add the link here in a few minutes.

Here's the link to my other thread.

My Father is William Flett, son of David, son of David Flett Jr. who was married to Diana Flett They are the parents of Henry Flett  not sure of birth. d. Sept 2. 1874. He was married to Diana Steven or Stivn  b. 17 Dec. 1789  I have some sources.  This may not be your Henry they all did seem to follow the naming rules so I have lots of Davids etc.  Betty

How wide a timeframe have you searched for his birth/baptism? If census transcripts on Findmypast are correct, he could have been born as late as 1787 (64 in 1851 census).  Any clues from children's names?

The Old Statistical Account for Wick (1790s) does say that some omit to record baptisms or marriages and also notes a small seceder presence, both of which could affect your search.

Thanks for that link, very, very interesting. It appears that the Fletts were of some importance in Pultneytown. Is there a link to appendix 2, the photographs ?
I will have to go and have a  look next time north.
Our David Flett, a " farmer " married Catherine Waters/Nicolson born 1889, an illegitimate child of a Bower farming family in 1902. By 1911, they were separate and Catherine married again in 1912 (and a third husband later).
Catherine went on to business success in the hotel industry. We have been wondering if her capital came down from the "naughty" father's family, who were at one time estate owners (Gordons of Swiney)

Appendix 2 is simply the list of photographs included in the report. Highland Housing Alliance (the owners of the report) might have them or you could look on the Highland Environmental Record site (http://her.highland.gov.uk/) which is the source of the report.
