Where is Buckley Street in Manchester?
« on: Saturday 22 November 08 08:44 GMT (UK) »
I have an 1874 birth certificate from the St Georges sub-district of the Manchester registration district. It gives"58 Buckley Street" as the address. How could I find out where this is (or was)? Does anyone know where I could find an old street map of Manchester from that period?

Thanks :)

The way I would go and look would be to go to  www.genuki.org.uk and go to the parish page for Manchester.

You can then get a link to the old-map site for St Georges.   The maps take a while to load as they are detailed and then its a question of having a really goog look!

Hello grungefrog ,
Welcome to rootschat .
There is an 1857 map of Manchester at www.artus-familyhistory.com/source/Early%20Maps.html and that may help if Buckley Street was built at that time .
My other thoughts would be to purchase a map from the Manchester Family History site , they have a good selection .
Other than that I am sure that you will get a definite answer to your question shortly as there are some very helpful people who use the rootschat site .
Good luck
Eric

I have an old map of manchester which shows a Buckley St in Collyhurst, close to present day Almond St near Rochdale Road.

www.jigrah.co.uk do a CD version of Bartholomew's 1900 map of Manchester. Not sure if Buckley St appears on it.

www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk also do reproductions of old ordnance survey maps

Thanks everyone on here for your suggestions and help. Have found Buckley Street just off what is now Rochdale Road in Collyhurst. Interestingly it is just inside the area known as "Irish town". My ancestor had an Irish surname (Walsh) so I guess this makes sense.

Hi,

Recently came across your notice by chance and I was wondering if you did indeed locate a map or picture of Buckley Street. Started my own family history recently and found out off my grandfathers Certificate of Service Record that he lived at 52 Buckley Street, Collyhurst in 1942.

Go to http://www.artus-familyhistory.com/Manchester%201930/2c%201930.html Click on section 2C and then the street index for that section. There are 3 Buckley streets shown in the area.
Cheers.
