I've been having a look through the complete marriages and there is one registered dec qtr 1946
Henry E Gilberthorpe to Mildred I Harris Halifax vol 2b pg 1365
What's the likelihood of another couple with such similar names?

The mother's maiden name on the birth on the birth reg looks more like Jones to me..

 :-\
just found her birth reg under Tones

Highly likely it may be her...think I may need to speak to my friend and see if there was a possibility she married both men! Hence the scandal!!!

Oh deary me..I can see the worms fighting to get out of the can!

Her maiden name was definately Tones....a mistranscription poss...but the chances of it not being the same woman are slim I would say....no wonder I couldn't find her marriage!

Okay...whilst discussing the family with her, she mentioned she had some Great Aunts and Uncles, who were the Martins...totally forgot about it, until now when I was looking through the Gilberthorpes just now on Freebmd...and Henry E Gilberthorpe was born to a Walter Gilberthorpe and a Florence Martin.....definately the right marriage then I would say....so now I wonder...which one of her husbands, was the french moroccan!!!

Sounds like the man she was engaged to she was really married to -hence the anullment of the 2nd marriage

tell your aunt not to worry about it - -my great aunt married 4 times -twice bigamously- and she went on to be regarded as a pillar of the local community !!!

Thanks for the replies...I have checked back further and After some rooting around, discovered Walters parents were Edgar Gilberthorpe, and Minnie Allen, his middle name is Allen.....furthermore, googled the address they were living at in Rotherham in 1881, where he was living with his parents and all born in Yorkshire... it was a lodging house...and there was a website on the Gilberthorpes...going back to the early 1800s, so now I am totally stumped.....

The mystery is now, who was my friends father....Mr Harris, or Mr Gilberthorpe....
