New interests JAMES and HARRIS
« on: Saturday 05 February 05 21:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I've just found a new layer of family, born in Blaina (Blaenau) and Newport, who I'm keen to explore.

LYDIA HARRIS was born in Blaina around 1860, and went on to marry FRANK COSLETT JAMES, an engineer (I only  know of him through his son's birth certificate).

They had several children

FRANK CUTHBERT JAMES born 1882 Newport
BERNARD SAMUEL JAMES, born 1884 Newport
HERBERT JAMES, born 1886 Cardiff
LILY JAMES born 1895 Pontypool

I've also found

ANN JAMES born 1818 Pontypool, who was Frank senior's mother, appearing as a widow in 1891 census in Trevethin.

I'm pretty  new to all this, and would welcome any further details on any of these people, or their ancestors.

thanks very much

Amanda (Ann's ggggranddaughter)

Hi Amanda

I have details of Lydia James, her three sons and her parents in the 1891 census.  Do you already have these details?

I don't, and I'd love them please! For some reason, they're not showing up on Ancestry search I've tried..so would love the information, and thank you!

Cosslett is a common name around the Pontypool area, I see you mention Ann James mother of Frank James something you neglected to mention in your email.

If you ask for help dont hold back any information that might help the person trying to help you.

Hi amanda

The 1891 census shows Lydia and her two of her sons living with her parents and the other son is with Ann James.

21 High St. Garndiffaith

William Harris     head   64    b. Trevethin
Maria Harris       wife     62    b. Llanover
Lydia James       dau     31    b. Aberystruth
Bernard James   g son      6      b. Cardiff, St. Andrews
Herbert James    g son     5   b. Cardiff, St. Andrews

The enumerator has marked William Harris as neither employed or unemployed.  No occupation listed.

11 Old Road, Aberysychan

Ann James   head   widow   63  Dressmaker   b. Pontypool
Frank Cuthbert James          9                          b. Newport

I haven't been able to find any details as yet about Frank Coslett James.  Have you searched the 71/81/91 census for him, I only did a quick search of the 1891 but can access the others.

Best

Hi

thanks again! don't know why, but ancestry.com isn't happening here, so if you've time, I'd really appreciate anything you can find in 71 and 81.

Cheers :)

Hi Amanda

Haven't found any Frank Coslett James in either the 71/81.  Found Ann's husband and a son Francis in the 1871.

1871 Trevethin,   Middle High St, Abersychan

Samuel James       head   53    Weighing Clerk  b. Llanover
Ann James             wife     43                             b. Llanover
Francis James        son      13   Scholar              b. Llanover

In 1881 Samuel and Ann are still living in High St. Abersychan, Francis has left home.

Will have a look for the Harris family tommorrow.

Thanks to Mike, have marriage of Frank/Frances as Mar 84 Newport, where he's listed as Frank Cuthbert, rather than Coslett (his name on son's marriage certificate). Don't know whether this'll confuse or clarify, but thanks!
