Martha GUPPY mother of Robert
« on: Sunday 06 February 05 02:12 GMT (UK) »
Have hit a brickwall  ???

I have a Martha Guppy listed as mother for a Robert Guppy:

Vital records index FHL Film 1279500
Gender:Male
Christening date: 31 march 1822
Recorded in: Hawkchurch, Dorset
Mother: Martha

after contacting the OPC for Hawkchurch, she was able to determine that Martha was an unmarried mother, but could not locate any record of Marthas birth, marriage, death etc.

So if anyone has come across this Martha born early 1800's (presumably)
Any info would be much appreciated  ;D
Thanks
Maria

 :) :)

I've searched the IGI and the only birth for a Martha Guppy that would fit, is

Martha Guppy

02 JUN 1805   Netherbury, Dorset, England

Parents:
  Father:  John Guppy
  Mother:  Ann Symes

So you could try the Parish Records for Netherby,  you might get some clues there.

Have you actually been into www.dorset-opc.com and put the name Guppy in the search engine ?  Countless hits as Guppys are in every village and they did move about a lot.  There were too many hits for me to continue exploring - several Martha's and Robert's.  Powerstock had a Martha bapt in 1799.  It's a good idea to check every Martha regardless of time period as it could be Mum or G/Mum, as they do like to pass down the name.

Hope it's some help.

My Uncle was Cyril Guppy who lived in Bridport Dorset and married my mums sister Frances. They lived at 109A South Street from the  1940s until their deaths approx 10 years ago. I am not 100% sure of his birthdate but somewhere around 1925. Their children were Linda and Valerie who also lived and grew up on South Street.

There's a Martha Guppy baptised in Thorncombe on 16 Aug 1801 d/o William and Elizabeth. That's much closer to Hawkchurch and the village where Robert appears on censuses.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

...and Thorncombe is where Robert married in 1847 (no father on certificate).
