Nehemiah Upward
« on: Monday 01 December 08 00:31 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information re Nehemiah Upward (poole about 1807) who migrated to Newfoundland and was Father of one of the Newfoundland Dynasties. Q. was he a Grandson of James Upward (Stourpaine about 1740)? Any info on this Upward family, pre 1800, will be welcome.
Regards

Hi Keith,

Sadly, baptism records for Poole and Parkstone have not been transcribed yet as far as I know. I am planning a visit to my local LDS Family History centre for a look at their microfiches but perhaps someone here has access to them.

Good luck. Lovely photo. :)

I am willing to bet you've seen this but there is the baptism of a Nehemiah Upward on IGI in 1836. Out of your timeframe but very likely a relative.

Thanks for your reply Paul, I've got pretty comprehensive records of the Upward families of Dorset, it's just this one on Nehemiah that is giving me grief! I appreciate your interest.

Keith

Hi,

Dorset Family History Society have transcribed some baptism records for the Poole area;  www.dorsetfhs.org.uk    Details on their "Parish Registers" page.

Keith

The Poole records for St James and Skinner Street are online via the FHS Online site from the late 17th century (for St James) and doing a search for Nehemiah Upward (with variations on both) doesn't bring any baptisms up for before 1818, Parkstone only had a church from 1833 before that any records will be in those of Canford Magna, unfortunately we haven't got either of those at the moment on the OPC!

Further information from the Newfoundland Upward Clan, suggests that Nehemiah Upward was born in Bournemouth, not Poole?
Sorry for the confusion!
Thanks for your efforts

If so you will need to go into the Hampshire records, Dorset History Centre holds some records for Bournemouth but only from the late 19th century. Before the boundary changes of 1974 Bournemouth was part of Hampshire. It is still worth checking some of the parishes close to the Dorset/Hampshire border as some of them have teetered between the two over the years.
