« on: Sunday 07 December 08 22:46 GMT (UK) »
This book will be extremely helpful to many people whose ancestors hail from Myddle.

It was written by Richard Gough around 1700 and revolves around the family history of the occupants of each pew in a church.

Its out of copyright so here is a short section which may refer to one of my Fardoe ancestors.....

"Michael, the eldest son of Michael Braine, displeased his father by marrying Jane, a bastard of one who went abroad a spinning for neighbours, and was called Black Nell. The reputed father of this Jane was Thomas Fardoe of Burleton. Hee fled to London, and there beecame very rich. It was thought that hee was worth severall thousands of pounds, in houses and timber, which he had in his timber yard in Southwick. Butt hee broake, and was layed in prison, and died poore"

It's a fascinating read and gives a real flavour of the time.
