Samuel Walker & Eliza Walker; Kent - Post 1851
« on: Tuesday 09 December 08 10:48 GMT (UK) »
After many years searching, I'm still completely flustered regarding the whereabout of Samuel Walker, b. about 1803, Canterbury and his second wife, Eliza after 1851.

Samuel was formerly the Governor of Abingdon, Berks prison. In 1851, he and Eliza are in Greenwich:

1851 England Census, Kent, Greenwich, Greenwich West, District 11
HO 107/1586
Ashburnham Grove
Walker, Samuel, Head of household, Married, age 45, Annuitant born Kent, Canterbury
Eliza, Wife, Married, age 40, Annuitant born Oxford
William, Son, Unmarried, age 17, Apprentice born Berkshire, Abingdon
Charles G., Son, Unmarried, age 11, Scholar at home, born Berks, Abingdon
Eliza G., Daughter, Unmarried, age 6, Scholar at home, born Berks, Abingdon
Thompson, Charles G., Visitor, Unmarried, age 30, Tailor born Oxford

I've been through Ancestry 100+ times, trying every conceivable name option and haven't found a thing past 1851. They've vanished, including Eliza's brother Charles G. Thompson.

It sounds unreasonable that they may have all died before the 1861 census, and there are no clear BMD records without spending a small fortune on certificates.

Samuel born about 1803-4 Canterbury
Eliza born 1809 Oxford

My gut instinct tells me that they left England, but I can't prove that either.

Might anyone have suggestions about further searching? Thank you in advance for your replies...

I can help you go backwards, ;D as this looks like his Baptism:
Samuel WALKER 3rd June 1804, St Mary Bredman, Canterbury.
Parents - John & Hipzebeth.

It does seem likely that they emigrated. I've put Samuel Walker into Ancestry's New York Passenger Lists database, & got hundreds of results, but I don't have access to the full Ancestry to check further.

I suggest you post on the USA board here, & someone will be able to check for you. If you don't find the family there, then try the Australia board, & so on.

Good luck.

Hi ,  :)
Like Betty I dont have World Sub  to A******* but dont despair i'me sure someone on here will look up your Sam and Family.
There only appears to be one Samuel Waker that meets the date of birth 1804 +- 2years criteria between 1851 1861 arrivals date for USA passenger lists .
Worth someone checking for you see if its them.
                                                    Good Luck,  Rog :D

Dear Betty and Grandarog,

Thank you so very much for your replies! I do have a World memberhsip to "A.com" and still no luck in finding records.

Curious if anyone has any better resources than "A.com" for Australian, India, or other non-US sources pertaining to immigration? Their records give nothing much more than names...

Sincerely,
NedraE

Hi NedraE

I am in NSW Australia, - lots of mass emigrations to Aust after 1851 and before 1861 (and to California etc too) as GOLD RUSHES occurred.  Passenger lists for Aus ?  try this link, and re-visit it weekly, as it is volunteers transcribing, but also they then put scanned image of manifests on too.

http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au There are other sites, if you think they went to Aus, but these are well recorded on their threads on our wonderful rootschat pages.

NedraE

Did you consider early death?

The 1851 census you quote has them living in Greenwich. There is this death record:
Dec 1856   Walker  Samuel    Greenwich  1d 358

There are four for 'Elizabeth WALKER's in Greenwich in the same period.

I also looked for their youngest daughter on the 1861 census. She appears to be working as a servant in St Pancras. (RG9; Piece: 124; Folio: 148; Page: 38)
OSBORNE, WAGHORN, LEDGER, DRURY, SMITHERMAN, TYLER, HUMPHREY, RABBITT, STAPLEY, BATT, WENMAN, SANDS, BUSS, QUINN, GARNETT

It's been a while but maybe this link to Ballarat cemetery has the man and woman you are after.  I was looking for another Samuel when I came across your post.  https://web.ballaratcemeteries.com.au/Deceasedsearch/DeceasedDetails.aspx?PersonId=1049768&LocationId=66825
Cheers.
