Hello Michael & Gadget,

Have just returned after re-checking BMD as I was sure that was the original source.to find that it has been sorted.  That was where I originally started from only to find when I got the info that some things didn't add up, so needed to try and find the name of the son in law to check details on his wife.
Thankyou both for your perseverance.
Hinton

Hinton,

Thank you for your thanks.

I hope you can see that if you had asked a different type of question in the beginning...
( e.g. "Did Robert Barrass have a son-in-law called R.F. Holt, Stott or Stoll ?" ) the chatters on this board would have come to the conclusion in a fewer number of steps.

After a ten-year gap in this thread, I'll add that James Sedcole, the South Shields Registrar was my second great granduncle-in-law.  My grandfather was given 'Sedcole' as his middle name, but I'll never know whether it was for that James Sedcole, or his father, James Willie Sedcole, a sea captain.

Curiosity about the unusual middle name bugged me for 45 years until I decided to start digging...
