Hi,
I've just found this wonderful site regarding Belper, and thought you might find it useful.
http://www.belper-research.com/IGIBatchNumbers/records-index.html
At the moment I can only find baptisms listed for Belper, but it may be that John married somewhere like Duffield, etc.
I'm sure if you contact the site they would be able to tell you if the marriage records exist for Belper, and where they can be found. They might also suggest other places near to Belper where the couple might have married.
Hope this helps + good luck.
Paulene :)

Is this your John Banks?

1841
Chester Buildings
Crown Court belper Derbys
John Banks 35 Cotton factory Smith
Elizabeth 35
Benjamin 13
John 10
Elizabeth 4
Herbert 3mths
all b in county
HO107 180 4 4 19

1851 living in lancs
children with them are Ann 20, Elizabeth 14, herbert 11, hannah 7, Sarah mths?
John and Elizabeth and  children all b Belper (except Sarah who was b manchester
HO107 226 174 49

With the age gap in children in 1841 it looks as if John cold have been married previously

but

IGI has (extracted records)
the following baptisms:
all in Belper Derbys
all to parents John Banks and Elizabeth
Ann Banks 20 Jun 1830
John Banks 1832
Benjamin Banks 4 april 1828

so either John and Elizabeth married pre 1828 -or John married 2 elizabeths????

There is a marriage IGI -but it is submitted
John Banks
Elizabeth Slater
3 Sept 1827
Duffield
Derbys

Duffield is a possible place for their marriage

the birth cert of one of the post 1837 children shold give you mother's maiden name

Hi!
This is my Banks family - John was born in Duffield 1806, he & Elizabeth Slater married 3/9/1827 in Duffield - so far I have located 7 children [Benjamin, Ann, John, Elizabeth, Herbert, Hannah & Sarah]. Benjamin was my GGGG'Grandfather.

Hi,

The address given for John Banks in the 1841 Census, in the previous quote is incorrect.

1841 address is
Cluster Buildings,
Belper.

Crown Court (today Crown Terrace) is separate street near by.

Ann Banks b 1830, is a servant in the house of Jedediah Strutt the second.  In this Census the address of this house looks as if it is in  Field Lane, however the house was actually in Market Street Lane (now Green Lane) and its junction with King Street.  This is connection to photo of the house:-
http://www.belper-research.com/places/green-hall.html

Jedediah was the grandson of Jedidiah Strutt who built the first cotton mills in Belper and Milford
and with Samuel Need financed Richard Arkwright when he build Cromford Mill.

John Banks, her father, would have been working at the Strutt Mills in Belper and living in one
of their houses a "Cluster House" these were built back to back and side to side pictures of these
can be seen:-
http://www.ilkcam.com/Specials/Towns/Belper/Belper04.html
cluster house is 3 pic. from bottom of page.

Hope this adds to your history.
