1901 census look up pls
« on: Saturday 20 December 08 17:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

Could some pls look on the 1901 census for Matthew Vickers (aged abt 38) & wife Margaret. They are living in Hull.

on the 1881 & 1891 Matthew is living down Hodgson St Hull with his parents. I do not think he moves far from that area. To aid things also he is a Cooper.

It is the birth place of Margaret that would be of importance. She was born in Ireland as far as I am aware but does it say where?

As most will know researching Irish ancestors can be fraut with problems so any help would be great.

Hi Newf

Sorry do not have access is there any chance of transcripts?

What I have got is :

Matthew in 1891 is at 94 Hodgson St Hull with mother etc aged 29 b.Hull
In 1881 he is at 24 Hodgson St Hull aged 19 b.Hull. He is a Cooper on both censuses.

Hodgson St Seems to flick parishes between Drypool, Sutton & Sculcoates as these are all bounded by each other.

Matthew (Gilbert) Vickers married Margaret Kelly (dau of John Kelly) 7/10/1892 at St Marks which is actually in Sutton parish but sometimes is placed in drypool parish. Confused yet?

Lime St is off Hodgson St. This could be OK for the 1891 census, who is Margaret living with?

the 1901 census address is a mystry. I live in Hull and have no knowledge of that address, it could have disappeared and I have never had anyone around that area, could you elaborate pls.

Thanks for the assistance

this is really starting to get very complicated. not sure where to look next.

On the marriage cert Margaret Kelly is a Spinster aged 28 dau of John kelly. witnesses are James Vickers (Matthews dad) & Esther Vickers (his sister).

both live in Lime St. On the 1891 census can you check each way by household like on the 1881? Are there any other Kellys?

The names on the 1891 census for Margaret certainly match up to the Vickers of 1901 but it seems strange that she is a widow in 1891. Although she could well have lied so as not to cause a scandle, which has happened before in my wifes family. A strange lot.

I have found on the 1881 census at 1 pinders Sq Sutton (Hull) a Mary Jane Kelley widow with a Dau Margaret aged 17 which matches up with the marriage cert age. could you look for Mary jane in 1871?

What is really throwing me is the census you have found, it matches too much for it not to look viable.

hope you do not mind all this

Nick

NB: I have found a John Kelly marr Mary Jane Oliver in 1861 Hull. I am not sure when in 1861 but may be before the census of that year. John dies in 1871 (again not sure if he would be on the census) aged 33. both events are in Drypool. these could be the parents of my Margaret but as with everything nothing is simple.

it would be nice to find this John & Mary Jane on at least one of the censuses to find out if there is an Irish connection. It has always been said that Margaret Kelly wife of Matthew Vickers was Irish ( but from what has been found she was not)
