Nickb - Came across your research from 2008 by chance.  Myself and your better half appear to have the same great great great grandfather, John Kelly, from Scotland who died in Hull Prison in 1871.  He had 3 daughters, Catherine (also known as Kate)(1861), Margaret (1863) and Mary Ann (1868). My link is through Catherine.

John Kelly died in Hull Prison in 1871 from TB.  He was serving 6 months hard labour for assaulting a police officer.  We have a copy of the inquest.  He seems to have gone into prison with a chest infection 15th August and died 3rd December 1871.  Mike

Just to confirm your wife's background the great great great grandmother, Mary Jane Kelly, also did time in prison before the husband.  We think it may be that he assaulted one of the police officers involved in his wife's case. Mike.

Hi Mike

Many thanks for the new info. My wife is quite intruiged with all this. she has finally got the Irish ancestry she always said she had but not from the person she thought. We all had a chuckle, I always knew her family were a bad lot  ;D.

I have sent you a pm with my e-mail address so we can continue off board.

cheers

Nick

Might be the Margaret who married John Kelly shown here in the 1871 census ....

RG10/4789; Folio: 87; Page: 16 - Holy Trinity (Myton district)
5, Mill Street

all kids born Hull

Walter Lowery 40  Head Pedlar Ireland
Margaret Lowery 33  Wife Ireland
Mary Lowery 15  dau Paper Ornament Maker
Michael Lowery 13  son
Catherine Lowery 9  dau
Margaret Lowery 6  dau
John Lowery 3  son
Harriet Lowery 8 months dau

Jane Lowery 35  Lodger Ireland

Walter Lowery and Margaret Duffy are my 3rd great grandparents.
I have a tree on ancestry if you are interested.
However I can't find Walters parents and Margarets father John Duffy was in hull Yorkshire with them but I have no Maiden name for his wife Harriet so my Irish tree stops at 1800. I would love to go back further, Walter Lowery was possibly born in Co Mayo but no Irish records available around his birth 1828/1832
