F Force Burma Thailand Railway (AIF)
« on: Saturday 20 December 08 23:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I want to read, learn more about F Force the Railway and the Australian prisoners.  There is so much available 'out there' that it would be helpful if someone could recommend a site that they have had experience of in connection with F Force, a mixed allied force.

My Uncle was sent to work on the railway from Changi on 16th April 1943 and was returned to Changi after 16th October 1943 when the bridge was finished.  I have his war records - service number SX 8844 - and if someone can decipher 8 DIV Amn Sub PK.   I am assuming it is the 8th division  ammunition ?????

Any help much appreciated,
Abiam

Hi Abiam

The unit was Ammunition Sub Park. There is a book that you would find most useful:

FROM WAYVILLE TO CHANGI AND BEYOND. 8 Division Ammunition Sub Park 1940-1945 by VENABLES (ISBN: 0957968809)

The Official files on F Force at the Australian Archives are AWM54 554/7/2

Hi,
I have just found it on Amazon, great, but a big problem!  It is 150 pounds!!!  Way beyond my reach I'm afraid and as I am living in Spain I cannot order it from the library.  I have found some papers on the web and think I will have to make do with them,
Abiam

Parts of this book have been scanned and are available to read here http://www.samemory.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=1027&c=4967

Click on 'view more images' and a new page will come up, you can then click on each thumbnail to read the page.

Hope this helps.

Hi Abiam,
if it would be possible for you to travel to The National Archives at Kew you could read original Documentation regarding F Force.
The Files contain much more than books do.

CAB 106/28- WO 208/3758 - WO 311/1331 and WO 325/16 are a good starting point.
