1851 census search. Charles Wise.
« on: Friday 26 December 08 07:37 GMT (UK) »

I cannot trace Charles Wise in 1851 census - ancestry.co.uk searched.
He died 7.4.1852 aged 75 (b.c.1777) at 3 Elswick Court, Newcastle.
He was a house painter.
Informant was his son Andrew – traced in Westgate in 1851.

I need Charles’ place of birth.

Can anyone help please?
Thanks.
Frek.

I see his son was born in Berwick on Tweed c1822.    Have you got his baptism details?    I was thinking about Scotland and there is a Charles Wise in 1841 in Newcastle, All Saints.   Born Scotland.   Wrong age but ages at death (and in 1841 can vary so much)

HO107 845 6 11 F10 p12
Charles Wise 50 Painter b Scotland
Anna Wise 50                       "
Charles 15  app book binder "
Robert 3 b in county

May be a red herring but worth thinking about.

Yes  - thank you  - this is my Charles. But I cannot find him in 1851 for birth parish in Scotland.
As he died in Newcastle in 1852 I hoped he might be traced in the area in 1851.
I think I will have to use the `scotlandspeople` site.
Thanks again -frek.

If he is Scottish then the naming pattern of his kids might help. What children did he have Frek?

Two baptisms on familysearch for children with parents Charles Wise and Anna at Berwick on Tweed, are these part of the family?

Agnes Wise 20 Sep 1818
Robina Ann Wise 19 Mar 1830

The 1st baptism entry is interesting because Charles 1st son was named Alexander. but as his year of birth was c.1777 it does not match.

The children were: Alexander b.c.1816 - location unknown, Agnes, Charles, George, Andrew, Robina Ann, Robert.
I have the baptisms for Agnes, Charles, Andrew, Robina at Berwick Holy Trinity.

The 1851 entry gives Charles occupation as a porter and his age is out of kilter with his known dob.

I plan to use the Scottish site after the holiday. Thank you for all your help.

Hi Frek

I wouldn't discount things altogether because as Andrea said, ages given in census etc. are often variable, and occupations can also change from census to census.  Death certificates likewise only have the information that the informant gave, and sometimes (as a lot of us have found) have the wrong dates and ages.

If Charles' first child was Alexander b.1816 and from the death cert you say he was born 1777, he would have been 39 when that birth took place, which seems a little old, although not impossible.  The 1841 census gives Charles' age as 50, and with ages rounded down to nearest 5 years he could have been anything from 50 - 54 making his dob around 1787-1800, not 1777, so the 1787 baptism for Charles that I gave you earlier would fit with that, as well as his father being called Alexander.

Kind regards
Barbara
