The 1900 Census is free if you want to take a look -  http://labs.familysearch.org/

Thanks, everyone, for your help. Finding the 1900 census online is a real bonus :-)

LissaM, sorry I misunderstood your reply. It looks like George died before 1900 and probably after 1895 if that is when they emigrated. I guess another possibility is that Margaret emigrated as a single woman and married in New York.

Plenty to think about - not sure where to go next.  :-(

An update to my search :-)

Taking advantage of the FindMyPast free weekend, I found this marriage:

Margaret Bennie married George McHardy on 1 May 1873 in Manhattan. (FamilySearch film number 001671678)

I suspect the Margaret McCardy mentioned previously in the 1910 census for Manhattan Ward 9 (widowed, aged 61, born Scotland, living with the Cornell family in Manhattan Ward 9) might be the one I'm after.

The immigration year on the 1910 census is given as 1861 but I can't find a record for a Margaret Bennie arriving in that year. Her parents were Robert Bennie and Mary Stewart, who married in Barony Scotland in 1842.

Can anyone help?

I'm not sure what the record you found shows on the marriage, but Family Search has it too - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:244T-S2K

castlegarden.org and familysearch.org have New York passenger records from that era.  The earlier passenger records don't give much in the way of detail, unfortunately.

Possible death record for George. Margaret was listed as widowed in 1900 & 1905 census
Age matches marriage record, as well as location on marraige &  other records.

Shellyesq, Thanks,  I did find the marriage on FamilySearch. Interestingly it was indexed twice, the second one has the bride's name as Margaret Cassells Bernice!

I just noticed that the 1900 census has her immigration date as 1895. Perhaps she went back to Scotland after her husband's death and then returned. I'll see what I can find on the sites you mentioned.

RJ137, Thanks for finding George's death. So soon after their marriage - how sad.

That site is great - do you know if there's a similar one for New Jersey?

There is a death index for New Jersey that recently came online, but some of the years are missing - https://www.newjerseydeathindex.com/
