« on: Tuesday 30 December 08 00:47 GMT (UK) »
I would be very grateful if anyone had any information on this family:

William Crozier and Christian Little, children baptized in Ewes:

Adam 5 February 1778 (Glendevan)
Mary 29 July 1780
Christian 3 March 1783 (Woodbankend)

An Adam Crozer was a witness at Jane's baptism.

I am guessing a relation to these families:

Hi Roderick,

I have a connection with Dumfries with the surname 'Shortridge' & wondered if your 'Shortrigss' may be a mis-spelling of Shortridge. Just a thought?

Bessie 12 june 1709
James  9 May 1714
Adam  16 Sept 1716  (witnesses: John Amos and John Elliott)

The information I have concerns William Crozier and Christian Little.

Births:
Jean, same date as above from the OPR
Elspeth, same date as above from the OPR
Adam, same date as above from the OPR
Mary, same date as above from the OPR
Euphemia, about 1782 at Ewes
Christian, same date as above from the OPR
Margaret, same date as above from the OPR
Thomas, 6th July 1786, OPR 777/1-105/frame 123
William, 14th or 17th April 1790, OPR 777/1-107/Frame 125
Helen, 9th January 1792, OPR 777/1-108/frame 126

William (the father) died at Newark, 12th June 1823, aged 78 years. There is a gravestone recording this in Yarrow Churchyard.
Based on the above it is believed that William was born about 1745. His wedding to Christian was likely circa 1772/1773 in the parish of Ewes but I don't have a record to back this up.
William worked as a shepherd, the family moved to Wolfcleuchhead c. late 1785/early 1786.

Hi Annie,

Black's Surnames of Scotland gives Shortridge as a variant of Shortrig and describes it as a Dumfriesshire surname deriving from Shortrig near Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire. The entry goes on to give historical variants and their sources.

Thanks. This accords with the information I have come across, except that I wasn't certain that the Thomas born in 1786 was of the same family. Is the residence of the father given as Wolfcleuchhead in the parish register? Maybe I missed this. Also, I think different records give different (estimated) birth dates for Euphemia. Her 1856 death record gives her age as 63. The 1841 (roughly) agrees, but the 1851 census gives an age of 69.

Thomas's entry reads "Baptized Thomas son to William Crozier in Wolfcleughhead", so yes, from the register.
Given the informant at death is the son-in-law I'd tend to go by the census information for Euphemia.

Don't know if you've bothered to follow up on the children or not.

Jean married John Linton, a wright, on 27th Nov 1796 at Yarrow. Last information on them is they were in ettrickbridgend in 1800 with family.
Elspeth possibly married Walter Cunninghame at Ettrick c.1800 then had a daughter the following year but this isn't definite as the bride's name was given as Euphan.
Adam married Margaret Beattie at Yarrow on 2nd Dec 1804, they and their children emigrated to Galt in Upper Canada in 1833.
Mary married William Pow at Yarrow on 27th Nov 1803, they moved to Wilton where William worked as a smith.
Euphemia married William Lockie at Wilton, 4th Dec 1814. They moved to Selkirk.
Christian married Adam Stewart, they lived with their family in Ettrickbridge, Christian later died in Lilliesleaf.
I don'tknow what happened to Margaret, possibly died as a child.
Thomas married Janet Brydon, this is recorded in both the Ettrick and the Wilton OPRs, 14th dec 1827 and 2nd dec 1827 respectively. Thomas later remarried.
William married Jean Clyde, 3rd May 1820 at Yarrow. They had ten children. William worked as a shepherd and also had a book of poetry published.
Helen married John Hogg at Ashkirk around 1819, they had children at Ashkirk before moving elsewhere. Helen died in 1868 at Hawick.

Thanks again for the info.

I had followed up with most of the children, except for Thomas. Do you have his second marriage as being to Elizabeth Stewart in 1846?

I think Adam (my ancestor) probably immigrated to Canada in 1831. He shows up in a census there in 1832, where he is still in the process of clearing the land on his farm on the Grand River; he and his wife were buried in Galt. His son-in-law (already then married) is recorded as having immigrated in 1831.

I guess you are probably right about Euphemia's birth date. The 1851 census gives the place as Langholm, which is a lot closer to Ewes than to Roberton. Euphemia was older than her husband (whom the 1841 census gives as being 48 years old), so perhaps some records minimized the difference in age.

I am not sure how realistic my hope is of finding good evidence for the parents of William Crozier and Christian Little. (What I have is pretty speculative.)
