James Lochhead & Catherine McGregor
« on: Friday 09 January 09 00:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm looking for information on the parents of James Lochhead b 9 Sep 1833 Glasgow, Lanarkshire.  Fa James Lochhead Mo Catherine McGregor.

Both his birth record and death cert name these parents, Jame married Jean Edgar 5 Jun 1857 and in 1861 he was living with his wife and her parents.

James Lochhead married Catherine McGregor 20 May 1834, Glasgow, they were both living there at the time, James was a Joiner.

I have found the following Census records which I think my tie in with the family but can't make a definite connection:

1851 - Dean Street, Fultons Lane, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire
Duncan McGregor   45 bc1806 Strathblane, Stirlingshire   Head   Calico Printer
Mary McGregor   36 bc1815 Strathblane, Stirlingshire   Sister   House keeper
James Lockhead   15 bc1836 Glasgow, Lanarkshire   Nephew   Calico Printer
Mary Lockhead   13 bc1838 Glasgow, Lanarkshire   Niece   House work
James McDougal   7 bc1844   Glasgow, Lanarkshire   Nephew
Christina McDougal   5 bc1846   Glasgow, Lanarkshire   Niece

1841 - Finiston Road Clyde Bank, Barony, Lanarkshire
James Lochead   6 bc1835   Lanarkshire
Mary Lochead   4 bc1837   Lanarkshire

1841 - Finiston Road Clyde Bank, Barony, Lanarkshire
Gregor M Gregor   65 bc1776  Scotland   Lab
Mary Gregor   66 bc1775 Scotland
Christina Gregor   39 bc1802 Scotland   Works in Bleachfield
Cathrine Gregor   37 bc1804   Scotland   Works in Bleachfield
Duncan Gregor   35 bc1806   Scotland   Cal Prin
Alexander Gregor   30 bc1811   Scotland   Bleacher J
Mary Gregor   26 bc1815   Scotland

I haven't found a birth or death for either James Lochhead or Catherine McGregor (I don't know who their parents were) and suspect they both must have died prior to 1855 which is why son James Lochhead appears in 1841 as a child without any adults present.

I have tried to find the parents of Duncan McGregor (shown in the Census) which may help find his siblings (hopefully including a sister Catherine) but have been unsucessful.  Have done lots of searches on Scotlands People but this seems to be a big brickwall.

Hoping somebody may have someone listed above in their tree.

Rachel

I took the date from this birth record on Scotlands People, had thought it was his birth and not baptism date.  The entry wasn't very clear:

James Lochhead ???ight and Catherine McGregor a law son James 9 Sep 1835

Hi Rachel

Have you checked the original image on Scotlands People for the 1841 census for the (Mc) Gregor family and James and Mary Lochead. They are both on the same page on the census entry (Barony; ED: 1; Page:  37) Likely they would show in the same household on the original image.

From the information you have given, I would guess that the Cathrine Gregor is the mother of James and Mary and they are at home with her family. Father James may have died by then and Catherine looks to have died between 1841-51, when James and Mary then show as  living with their Uncle Duncan (who shows in 1841 in the Gregor household).

As you know, no relationships in the household are given in the 1841 census, also, ages for everyone over 15 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years, not always followed though. The Cathrine in 1841 shows as born c.1804. Given her brother Duncan shows as born in Strathblane, Stirlingshire, there is this possible birth entry for her:

CATHARINE MCGRIGOR Christening on 04 DEC 1803 in Strathblane, Stirling
Parents: GRIGOR MCGRIGOR and MARY STEWART

It would be good to find a death cert. for Duncan McGregor to confirm these parents but can't easily see him in the 1861 census nor can I see a death for him between 1855-61 in the Glasgow area  :-\

Monica  :)

Added: The OPR entry that you have seen, the ???ight after James father's name is probably wright (joiner).

Other OPR entries for the 1841 household look like these:

DUNCAN MCGRIGOR Christening: 30 JUN 1805 Strathblane
ALEXANDER MCGRIGOR Christening: 08 OCT 1809 Strathblane
MARY MCGREGOR  Christening: 14 MAR 1813 Strathblane

Many thanks Monica for all your help and advice, I would have replied before now but you have kept be busy  :D
I did check the 1841 Census on Scotlands People and they were all together, I thought it was strange to have a household with just 2 young children.  The original image wasn't available on Ancestry.

I now have the following births which you suggested and I believe they are all the same family.

30 Jun 1805 Strathblane, Stirling, Duncan McGrigor
Duncan, son lawful to Grigor McGrigor and Mary Stewart his spouse in town = head Ballioron was baptised.

8 Oct 1809 Strathblane, Stirling, Alexander McGrigor
Alexander, son lawful to Grigor McGrigor, Labourer in Wester?? Blairquhorh and Mary Stewart his spouse was baptised.

14 Mar 1813 Strathblane, Stirling, Mary McGregor
Mary, lawful daughter of Gregor McGrigor in G???sicle and Mary Stewart his spouse was baptised 14 Mar 1813.

4 Dec 1803 Strathblane, Stirling, Catharine McGrigor (my 4 x g grandmother)
Catharine, lawful daughter to Grigor McGrigor and Mary Stewart in (too faint to read) was baptised.

I can't find the marriage of Gregor McGregor  and Mary Stewart and have tried many variations of the spellings and it doesn't appear to be there.  Because they both died prior to 1855 I don't think there's much chance of finding more on them.  A search for a birth for Gregor McGregor brought up too many possibilities.

There was a Duncan McGregor who marr Jean Stewart 1 Nov 1801 Fortingall, Perth and I was wondering if he could have been a brother of Gregor (and/or poss sister of Mary Stewart), maybe I am clutching at straws there.

Thanks again for your help, it is very much appreciated.
 :)

I have found a possible birth for Gregor McGregor, going from the before mentioned marriage for Duncan McGregor in Fortingall.

Gregor McGrigor 28 Jun 1778, father Robert McGrigor, mother Catherine McGrigor, assuming this could be all the same family, I'll continue researching these and see what comes up.

Hi Rachel,

I have just started researching our family history and have come to a stop with James Lochhead and Catherine McGregor. I found this thread when I started googling and being that it was a few years ago I wondered whether you got anywhere with confirming any details?

Cheers
Erin
