Oxfordshire marriage index - Whitehead
« on: Friday 09 January 09 11:54 GMT (UK) »
I was wondering if someone would kindly look up a marriage between
James Whitehead and Ann ??(unknown)  they were both born North Aston around 1791 so may have been in that area.

The marriage would have been somewhere around 1820 as their first child was born in 1822.

Any more info would be appreciated

Thanks.
Mel.

Hi Mel ...

Unfortunately, there's no sign of James and Ann's marriage on the OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837).

As North Aston is fairly close to the Northamptonshire county boundary, I also checked that county's marriage index, but nothing on that one either.

Hello, I am researching the same couple. My best guess is that she is Ann Neville (transcribed Nevik) who married James Whitehead in Oxford at the right time. I can find no trace of places in Oxfordshire called Horley or Ordlyne, where she was born, according to two census records. Very challenging! Did you get anywhere after posting your enquiry?

There was a place called Hordley which came under Wootton, next to Woodstock.*

North Aston (the alleged birthplace) and Wootton were both in the Wootton Hundred of Woodstock Poor Law Union (PLU), so not far apart.

Ancestry now has the PRs for pre-1974 Oxfordshire.  I can have a look on Tuesday in our local library if you don't have an Ancestry subscription.

Thank you, I hadn't found Hordley. I was looking at Ardley as a possibility, but your suggestion sounds more likely.

Forgot to mention, I have Ancestry, so will try searching with the new birthplace.

I believe I have found the correct marriage to Ann Neville, and with a bit of digging I think I've successfully worked back another couple of generations. She was born in North Leigh. I'm looking forward to getting a marriage certificate to confirm my theory! Or perhaps my DNA results will confirm it!
