Beynons Llangadock/Brynamman
« on: Friday 09 January 09 15:28 GMT (UK) »
Just begun looking up my Welsh ancestors who lived in and around Brynamman.  My Great grandfather was Lewis Beynon b c1833 and d 1871. His wife was Mary but unable to find marriage for them.  They had children John ( b c1859 d 1882 ) Margaret Ane b c1869,  David b c1865 and Elizabeth b c1862. In 1861, 1871 and 1881  census parish Llangadock.  Dec 1899 David married Jane Jones at Gibea Chapel Brynamman. Her father Thomas Jones who was a refiner at ironworks was deceased at time of marriage as was Lewis Beynon. Can anyone help with marriage of Lewis and Mary so I can find their father's names please. Any info on the Beynons would be appreciated. Members of the family were living in Brynamman until c1983 ( Getta Tanner ).

Hi

This is the only one I could find as well and I sent for the certificate thinking she might possibly be a Margaret Mary or something like that.  Every census from 1861 to 1901 gives her name as Mary although her age varies - bithdate from c1827 to c1833.  In the 1901 census her name is given as Mary aged 74 living with her son David, his wife Jane and son John Emrys who was my uncle.  He was known as Emrys. I know these are the correct people from the address as David's sister lived there until her death in 1983.  My mother told me her name was Mary and my twin sister is called Mary Jane. Jane was after our grandmther Jane , my middle name is Sarah after our maternal grandmother. Never told if Mary was after g grandmother. I did find a Lewis B-ynon married to a Mary Jones in 1857  ref 11a 982 LLandovery last night and if no one can shed any further light I'll send for it.. Thanks for your help

Chris

Hi Chris

I looked on the full index on Ancestry. Its clearly Beynon.
There does seem a strong naming pattern with Mary.

Going from Lewis' place of birth of Talley in the 1861 census, there's this possible in 1851

Blaenllynant, Llangadock HO107/2470 folio 112 pg 3
Lewis Beynon 23 farm servant b. Talley
in the household of Eleanor Williams farming 164 acres

Thought I'd found him 'sleeping over a stable' in 1841 in Llanboidy, but that Lewis turns up later in Aberdare.

possible for Mary in 1851
Bridge St, Llandilo fawr HO107/2471 folio 386 pg 10
Mary Jones 23 house servant b. Llangadock
in the household of David Jones, innkeeper

couple more possibles in Llangadock, slightly younger.

Well, I found 3 houses under the name Cappel Gwynfe in 1851. They are in enumeration district 3a of Llangadock which is 13 pages in all. The Lewis Beynon I found is in the same enumeration district.  :D

There is a Jones family in one of the houses at Cappel Gwynfe, headed by Morgan, but they've moved by 1861, so no guarantee they were there at the time of Mary's marriage.

Also, a couple of pages away is this interesting looking family
HO107/2470 folio 117 pg 113
John Jones head mar 64 labourer
Anne wife 33
Eleanor dau 9
David son 8
Lewis son 8
Elizabeth dau 4
Thomas son 2
Anne Griffith nursing child 6 months
all born Llangadock

Could this be a second marriage for Mary's father John?

This John died between 1851 & 1861 and Anne remarried probably dec qtr 1855 Llandovery vol 11a pg 900
Company Row, Glynaman, Llandilo fawr
Daniel Evans head mar 47 iron founder b. Cilycwm
Anne wife 50 b. Llangadock
David Jones son 19 housekeeper (that's what it says  ??? ) b. Llangadock
Lewis Jones son 17 coal miner b. Llangadock
Elizabeth Jones dau 15 b. Llangadock
Thomas Jones son 12 b. Llangadock
Esther Evans dau 4 b. Llandilofawr

Christine

I believe that my Elizabeth Beynon is a sister to your Lewis, she got married in Gwynfe Chapel on 14 May 1855 father is also John labourer and Lewis is a witness (by mark)
