Yes Sue  tried  that  using Owens and Owen  just in case  but  I  don't have the Pioneer index and is possible  she died young  but  I  would think Terra would have checked that

Regross in his good finding of the sister ELLEN's birth, did not mention the year.

It was mentioned 2 posts after.

I didn't think of Stambridge, but tried lots of other combinations. Well done.

Could John have been a crew member and she married on the ship?

The death cert's the go, isn't it?  :-\

Right, I decided to go over my self imposed monthly cert limit and get Flo's death cert.

What it does is confirm most of what all you great detectives out there have come up with.

She died 3 Feb 1901 at the Alfred Hospital, a 44 year old housewife.  She had a carcinoma of the stomach and liver exhaustion.  Her parents were unknown to the informant John Galletly her son in law.  Her birthplace is given as Cheltenham, England and she spent, in this order on cert, 7 years NSW, 2 years Queensland and 17 years in Victoria.  It states that she married John Owens at the age of 19 in Brisbane and that he is still living.   Her children are Mabel 24 years, Ellen 23 years and Alice 16 years.

So, maybe she married around the time of Mabel's birth hence the registration in both names and maybe they had split by the time Alice came along but there was no divorce.  Or just maybe the 'marriage' was just a story in order to maintain respectability.  But, who was she 'housewifeing' for?

Cheers

Bob

Hi Bob,
What a satisfying outcome for you and the Rchatters ;D, even though there are sad elements and mysteries remaining.

I suspect the marriage did not happen.  I can't think of another reason to give the third daughter the surname of STANBRIDGE.

Perhaps John was already married or something like that.

Some things we wil never know ??? ??? ???

I know what it is like to not find a marriage. It's one reason I try and help out.

I can't find a marriage in Collingwood, Victoria for Ellen(helen) Clark(e) and William Henderson in or around 1864.

I have all her Australian documentation, icluding where she is buried, except this. She had no children, can find no marriage in another state and subsequent marriage under that name (her sister married in SA and later as a widow in Victoria).  I guess I will never solve this, but it would be nice to know!!!

There is  still  the  matter of Edith Alice or Alice as she is referred to on  her mother's death certificate.  She  was 16 years old.

Have been  looking around for a  marriage and death but no joy as yet.
