LOVETT/DAVIS
« on: Wednesday 09 February 05 18:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi can anyone please help. I am looking for information on a James Lovett a Bootmaker of Windsor, his daughter was Maude (my G Grandmother) born abt 1876 and married Ernest George Davis at St Edwards Church Windsor in 1897. Ernest's father was John Davis a Gardener of Old Windsor. On the marriage certificate there is an address for Maude as 9 Garden Rd, River Street, Clewer M????. The address for Ernest looks like Tapestry M??? but I live in Southampton and do not know the Windsor area at all so am probably misreading it !! Any help you can give me would be great.
Best wishes

Elaine,

St Edward's Church in Windsor is a Catholic church.  I suspect that the "Clewer M.." is actually "Clewer without" i.e the part of Windsor to the west.  River Street is still there but I can't see any sign of anything like Tapestry.. nor have I ever heard of it.

I am going to move this to the Berkshire board, since Windsor is actually in Berkshire.  Then others with more local knowledge may come up with the answers.

1871 census

4 Garden Court, Clewer

James Cokeley LOVETT head mar 30 cordwainer b.London Middlesex
Amelia wife 35 b.Eton Bucks
James son 3 b.Windsor
Kate dau 1 b.Windsor

RG10/1301 folio 35 page 13

This is obviously the same family as in the 1881 census (posted above) but the birthplaces and ages of the parents are rather muddled.  Unfortunately, that is what is written on the actual returns.

Thank you all so very much for your help with my research, I think I am going to be very busy sorting through the info.  I think the discrepancies with ages is because there is a James Lovett Senior and James Lovett Junior.  Once again a million thanks  :)

Hi Lainey

The discrepancies in the ages for James junior and his wife Amelia are nothing to do with there being a James LOVETT senior ie.

1871 - 4 Garden Court
1881 - Stocker's Buildings

They are both definitely James LOVETT junior it's just that the ages and birthplaces of James LOVETT junior and his wife Amelia differ.  I would suspcet that the census enumerator either made a mistake or else the information was provided by somebody who wasn't quite sure of the truth.

Best wishes
