Lancashire Records Office
« on: Thursday 15 January 09 02:23 GMT (UK) »
I'll be going this weekend or next week- only for now. I can't do this all the time (so please don't lock it?)

I'll be willing to do a few lookups for people for anywhere that the office covers...

It'll be my first time in this particular RO so if I have a lot of enquiries for help I apologise if I'm not able to complete yours on the day... though, I'm in the Liverpool area a lot, hopefully I'll be able to offer more in the future :)

So just send me a message, I'd love to help all of you out especially those who can't make it to the office for various reasons.
Thank you to everybody whose helped me out in the past.
Lisa.

For a look up request please start a new topic in the LANCASHIRE LOOKUP REQUESTS board giving as much information as you can.

Lisa,
If you are not overwhelmed could you please look up the following for me...

William McGowan  Lanc BMD record: PRES/112/90
Date of Death is 1865
William's birthdate is 30 May 1865, Anderston, Glasgow, Scotland.
If this is the record I am looking for then parents should be James McGown b 1840 Paisley, Scotland and mother should be Mary S. Douglas Inglis born c. 1844 Glasgow

I do not have an address for the family as they were in transition from Glasgow to Liverpool eventually living in West Derby district where all their other children were born.  McGown should not have the "a", however it has been both ways throughout my research and sometimes is a transcription error.

Thanks so much for your time, happy hunting,

Joellen

Hi Joellen,

Yeah, you're my first request actually!! How exciting :D

I'll look it up for you.. poor thing to have died so young though. I think it will be start of the week.

It will be my first time there, but I assume that's Preston area so I'll have a good look at the records for you, and West Derby, as that's my main area of research. Hopefully I'll come up with some results. :)

I went there a couple of times with my husband and they have a little tea room that you can put your lunch ect in and for  tiny price you can make tea ect.
You can lock up your bag for £1 but get it back when finished.
Staff very helpful but its very quiet.
Use a clear plastic folder with your notes and pencils take ID to use facilities to get a card for future use.
If you are travelling by car watch out for cameras as we got fined £60 for doing less than 40 mph in a 30mph zone.

They hold Cheshire wills too

Thank you for your offer Lisa.

I've never been to a record office in Britain so I'm wondering ...will you be able to see the actual record  ??? For example, a birth record showing the parents  ???

You can see the parish records pre 1837 but the ones for the BMDs I think they are only available by certificate for £7

Lisa,

No hurry on this, it is just one of the loose ends on this family.

I have found them on the 1871 Census and entries to 1901 in West Derby.  This family of McGowns had 11 children, 2 died young, 7 children I have found as adults in Canada & Ireland and 2 are still eluding me.  All in good time and there is lots to look for.

Enjoy your trip.
Regards,
Joellen

You can't see the BIRTH record as you'd have to order a certificate, which is around £7-£10 I think.

However, if they were christened, married or buried I can look them up providing the Office has those Parish Records for the time-frame you're after...
If you can provide me with details of whoever you've after and a place I'll let you know (preferably the church name too!) -

They're pretty good for the area of Lancashire, as far as I can tell, but perhaps I've been lucky. I've had look ups on my Nain in the 1915-1940s in Liverpool on them, and my ancestors up to 1500s!
