Francis Bunce - Kilrush
« on: Friday 16 January 09 01:54 GMT (UK) »
I've found a reference concerning a Francis Bunce who was a shoe manufacturer in Kilrush.  If he existed, he is my GGGgrandfather.  He married a Miss McKane - first name not given.  Sons included James (b circa 1818), Patrick (b circa 1829 - also my GGGrandfather), Thomas (b unknown).  Francis Bunce would have been both between 1770 - 1790.  I can't find anything about him.  Religious background would be Roman Catholic.  Any help in locating information about Francis and/or other members of his family would be greatly appreciated.

Well apparently I am a descended from William Bunce - some of his offspring fled to Birmingham during the potato famine, Catholics, after which one son of Cyril Bunce's sons became abbott of Mt St Bernards near Leicester. Other brothers included Bernard, Anthony, David and Paul - now all deceased. Many parish records were destroyed in Ireland, but Bunce is not an Irish name; it is more likely to have hailed from 'Pons' - a Norman town post 1066. The Pons name appears in the annals of Gloucestershire as post-Norman conquest owners of the (now) Clifforde family estate in Gloucs (still the case in Frampton on Severn). Other Normans did head off to Ireland and casue mayhem there too - which may account for more recent history too (?). Otherwise, Bunce is also linked an old word meaning 'long bone' (hence the heights in our family). Also the slang for someone who can turn their had to many jobs if there is money involved. Hmmmm. National Geographic attributes my own background to Scandinavia - for any families out their with a Longue Duree approach of tracing back to pre-history!
