Bridles and Crofts in Frome Vauchurch and around
« on: Saturday 17 January 09 13:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi - Is anyone else tracing these families - Bridle and Croft (and variants) in Frome Vauchurch are surrounding villages? I've got back to the 1670s with the Bridles and 1761 with Crofts. In particular, I'm looking for a Sarah Craft/ Croft/ Crofts who had an illegitmate child by a Benjamin Bridle (or so it seems) in 1761 in Frome Vauchurch. Can find no further records of her. Any help appreciated. In return, I have a huge family tree for these families which I've been tracing since 1993.

Hi,

I share an interest in the Bridles and Crafts of the Frome Vauchuch area.  Benjamin Bridle Craft born c1757 Frome Vauchurch is in my tree.   I have a note of his mother probably being Sarah Craft chr 13 Jan 1732 in Toller Fratrum.  I am assuming Benjamin was illegitimate as I have not found a marriage for his parents and he was given both the names Bridle and Croft.

Hi Barleycorn,

Thanks for all the ancestry details of Benjamin Bridle Croft.  Sadly, I have nothing further on either the Bridles or Crofts.  Do you know if there was a Bastardy order for Benjamin Bridle Croft?

There is a will for a William Bridle, senior yeoman of Hermitage, Dorset (1612) on the Wiltshire and Swindon Archive Catalogue website, and another William Croft, senior 1638.  As Hermitage is not far from Frome Vauchurch I wonder if he could be connected or maybe not.

My line follows Benjamin and Martha's daughter Elizabeth who married John Rolls.

I hope you don't mind but I have revised your notes to help clarify the ancestry in my own mind as I was a little confused - have I got it right?

Generation1.
William Bridle, Yeoman c1600-1672 + ?
a.   William  Bridle (yeoman) ?-1707 m Jane
b.   John Bridle (yeoman) 1636-1708 m Edith

Generation 2.
John Bridle (yeoman) 1636-1708 + Edith
a.   Elizabeth Bridle ?-1702
b.   John Bridle (Senior Clerk) 1664-1748 m Ann
c.   Martha Bridle 1670-?
d.   Jane Bridle 1673-?

Generation 3.
John Bridle (Senior Clerk) 1664-1748 + Ann
a.   John Bridle (yeoman) 1696-1776 m Margaret Presley
b.   Ann Bridle 1698-?
c.   Grace Bridle 1700-?
d.   Jane Bridle 1704-?
e.   Jonathon Bridle (yeoman) 1706-?
f.   William Bridle 1709-1713

Generation 4.
John Bridle (yeoman) 1696-1776 + Margaret Presley
a.   John Bridle 1734-?
b.   Richard Bridle 1737-?
c.   Benjamin Bridle (yeoman) 1740-183 4 + Sarah Craft (had illegitimate son), m1 Grace Luccas, m2 Ann Cornish
d.   Joseph Bridle 1747-?
e.   Sarah Bridle 1749-?
f.   Samuel Bridle 1749-?

Generation 5.
Benjamin Bridle (yeoman) 1740-1834 + Sarah Craft/Croft
a.   Benjamin Bridle Croft (Shepherd) 1761-1839 m m1 Martha Curtis, m2 Mrs Ann Forse

Yes, you have that correct.

Could you give me the details you have on Elizabeth and John Rolls and I'll add them to my records?

Thanks for the info on the wills. I will look into that.

Benjamin Bridle Croft is my Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather so I shudder to think what that makes us. In theory, sixth cousins is it? Though it's probably something far more convoluted.

Oh - if memory serves me correctly the bastardy bonds for that period in Frome Vauchurch did not survive. So there is no way of absolutely proving that 'Benjamin Bridle' was 'Benjamin Bridle Croft's' father. It just seems very likely as there was, it seems, the custom of giving a male bastard the father's full name and then the mother's surname. I also couldn't find evidence of a will for Benjamin Bridle, which might also provide more evidence.
